Parking
The sign indicates that parking is permitted at the location, provided that the parking does not conflict with the provisions of the trafikkreglene concerning stopping or parking. If the sign has supplementary plate 828 “Extent of stopping or parking regulation”, parking in the indicated direction is nevertheless permitted even if the parking conflicts with the provisions of the trafikkreglene concerning stopping and parking. If a supplementary plate indicates that parking is reserved for specific vehicle or road-user groups, parking is prohibited for others. If the sign is placed in or beside a specially demarcated area, e.g. a parking area, the sign applies to the entire area. Otherwise, the sign applies only on the side of the road where it is erected. The sign then applies up to the nearest road junction or to a new sign 552 “Parking”, sign 370 “No stopping”, sign 372 “No parking” or sign 376 “Parking zone”. If a miniature of the sign, possibly with a supplementary plate, is attached to a parking meter, parking is permitted in accordance with special rules concerning paid parking. The sign then applies to the relevant parking space regardless of the provisions of the trafikkreglene concerning stopping and parking.
When you see the sign
You may park here, but you must first check the supplementary signs, road markings and any conditions concerning fees, time limits or who the space is reserved for. Also check that parking does not conflict with the provisions of the traffic regulations on stopping and parking, unless the signs expressly provide an exception.
Rules
- The sign permits parking, but normally does not override the general prohibitions on stopping and parking in the traffic regulations.
- Outside a specially designated area, the sign applies only on the side of the road where it is installed, up to the nearest junction or the next relevant regulatory sign.
- If the sign is placed in or beside a specially designated area, such as a car park, it applies to the entire area.
- If a supplementary sign reserves the parking spaces for specific groups of vehicles or road users, others are prohibited from parking there.
- With supplementary sign 828, parking in the indicated direction may be permitted even if it would otherwise conflict with the provisions of the traffic regulations on stopping and parking.
Tips
- Read all supplementary signs before parking; times, fees, maximum duration and vehicle categories may restrict the permission.
- Look for arrows or supplementary sign 828 showing which direction or section the regulation applies to.
- Check whether the sign applies to an entire car park or only to the relevant side of the road.
- At a parking meter, you must follow the conditions shown on the machine or indicated by a miniature sign.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the sign always makes parking legal regardless of the distance from a junction, pedestrian crossing or other places where stopping or parking is prohibited.
- Overlooking that a supplementary sign may reserve the space for, for example, people with reduced mobility, specific vehicles or other specified groups.
- Assuming that the sign automatically applies on both sides of the road.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt indicates that parking is permitted provided that it does not conflict with other rules.
- BIt indicates that a lane for public transport, kollektivfelt, begins at this location.
- CIt indicates that a lane for heavy traffic begins at this location.
- DIt indicates that the traffic rules for motortrafikkveg apply from this location.
Medium
You arrive at a place with this sign and a supplementary sign reserving the space for people with reduced mobility. You do not have a valid parking permit. What do you do?
- AI park there because the supplementary sign only gives people with reduced mobility priority.
- BI park there because the main sign allows all passenger cars to park.
- CI do not park there because the space is reserved for the specified group of road users.
- DI park there because the reservation only applies to vehicles over 3 500 kg.
Hard
The sign has supplementary sign 828 with an arrow pointing right. The indicated section is less than five metres from an intersection. What applies?
- AI can park up to the next intersection because the arrow only shows which side of the road applies.
- BI can park on both sides of the road because the arrow cancels the sign's normal extent.
- CI can park in the indicated direction only if the distance to the intersection is at least five metres.
- DI can park in the indicated direction even if the distance to the intersection would normally make it prohibited.
Theory test tip
A common trap is assuming that the sign alone overrides all general parking prohibitions. In the theory test, you must check the sign's location, the supplementary signs and whether there is a special rule such as supplementary sign 828 or a miniature sign on a parking meter.
Did you know
A miniature version of the sign may be placed on a parking meter. In that case, the permission and fee regulations apply to the relevant parking area, regardless of the usual provisions of the traffic regulations on stopping and parking.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign apply on both sides of the road?
No, it normally applies only on the side of the road where it has been installed. In a specially designated parking area, however, it may apply to the entire area.
How far along the road does the sign apply?
It normally applies up to the nearest junction or a new sign for parking, no stopping, no parking or a parking zone. Supplementary signs may indicate a different extent.
Can I park here if a supplementary sign reserves the space for a specific group?
Only if you belong to the specified group of vehicles or road users and meet the conditions. Parking is prohibited for everyone else.
Does the sign mean that parking is always free?
No. A supplementary sign, parking meter or payment system may specify a fee, time limit and other conditions.
