End of motorveg
The sign indicates that motorveg ends.
When you see the sign
The motorway and the special motorway traffic rules end at this sign. Adjust your speed to the road ahead, and look out for a new speed limit, junctions, oncoming traffic or other changes in the road environment.
Rules
- The sign marks the point where the road no longer has motorway status.
- The special rules for motorways, including those concerning stopping, reversing and turning around, no longer apply beyond the sign. However, such actions must still be permitted under other rules and signs.
- The sign does not itself establish a new speed limit. You must follow the speed-limit signs and, otherwise, the general speed limits that apply at the location.
- Beyond the sign, the type of road and traffic conditions may change quickly, for example at junctions, roundabouts, where oncoming traffic is encountered, or where road users who cannot use motorways are permitted.
Tips
- Ease off the accelerator early if the road becomes narrower or a lower speed limit is approaching.
- Look well ahead for junctions, roundabouts, pedestrians and oncoming traffic.
- Check the signs carefully; do not automatically assume that the speed limit becomes 50 km/t when the motorway ends.
- Do not stop immediately after the sign without checking that stopping is both permitted and safe.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the sign means the end of a motor traffic road. Sign 505 has that meaning.
- Thinking that the speed limit automatically becomes 50 km/t. The sign ends the motorway, but does not indicate a specific speed limit.
- Thinking that it is immediately legal to park, reverse or turn around. The motorway prohibitions no longer apply, but other rules, signs and safety considerations still apply.

Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt indicates that the kollektivfelt ends.
- BIt indicates that the motorveg ends.
- CIt indicates that the heavy-traffic lane ends.
- DIt indicates that the motortrafikkveg ends.
Medium
You pass the sign and immediately approach a rundkjøring (roundabout). No new speed-limit sign has been erected. What should you do?
- AReduce to 50 km/t because the sign automatically introduces this limit.
- BReduce to 80 km/t because the sign automatically introduces this limit.
- CFollow the applicable speed limit and adapt your speed to the rundkjøring (roundabout).
- DMaintain the same speed because the special rules for motorveg (motorway) still apply.
Hard
Shortly after the sign, you discover that you have driven the wrong way and are considering reversing. Which statement is correct?
- AReversing is still prohibited until you pass the sign that marks the end of motortrafikkveg (motor traffic road).
- BReversing is always permitted after the sign because all restrictions on this type of driving have ceased.
- CReversing is permitted after the sign only if the speed limit is 50 km/t or lower.
- DReversing is no longer prohibited by the motorveg (motorway) rules, but it must be permitted and safe under the other rules.
Theory test tip
A common trap is confusing this sign with «Slutt på motortrafikkveg». Look at the road symbol behind the red diagonal stripe, and remember that the sign does not indicate a specific new speed limit.
Did you know
A motorway can also end where it transitions into a motor traffic road, or at the junction between an exit road and a road that is not a motorway. Therefore, sign 504 is not the only way motorway status can end.
Frequently asked questions
Does the speed limit automatically become 50 km/t after the sign?
No. The sign only indicates that the motorway ends. Continue to follow the speed-limit signs; where no specific limit applies, the general limit is normally 50 km/t in built-up areas and 80 km/t outside built-up areas.
Can I stop immediately after the sign?
The motorway's special prohibition on stopping no longer applies, but stopping must still be permitted and safe. Among other things, you must consider other signs, visibility, junctions and traffic hazards.
Can there be oncoming traffic after the sign?
Yes, the road ahead may be an ordinary two-way road. Look at the road markings, lanes and signs, and be prepared for the road standard to change.
Is this the same as the end of a motor traffic road?
No. Sign 504 ends a motorway, while sign 505 ends a motor traffic road. The symbols are similar, but indicate different types of road.
