Public transport lane (Kollektivfelt) (508.1)

Public transport lane (Kollektivfelt)

Information Signs Sign number: 508.1

The sign indicates that kollektivfelt begins and that the provisions of the traffic rules concerning kollektivfelt apply. A bus with up to 16 passenger seats in addition to the driver's seat may only be used in kollektivfelt when carrying out licensed passenger transport or with at least 7 passengers in addition to the driver. A taxi may only be used in kollektivfelt when the taxi is equipped with a roof light. The sign applies up to sign 510 “End of kollektivfelt” or up to the first road junction. The sign is also cancelled by direction signs indicating another use of the lane.

When you see the sign

The sign indicates that a bus lane begins. You must keep an ordinary passenger car out of the lane unless your vehicle is covered by a legal exception or a supplementary plate explicitly permits its use.

Rules

  • Sign 508.1 reserves the lane for buses; taxis are not included, unlike with sign 508.2.
  • Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles may generally use the bus lane.
  • Electric or hydrogen-powered motor vehicles may generally use the lane, but a supplementary plate may restrict or prohibit this, for example at certain times.
  • The sign normally applies until sign 510 «Slutt på kollektivfelt», the first junction, or until a direction sign indicates a different use of the lane.
  • You may cross the lane boundary only, for example, when changing lanes or turning, provided that the road markings and signs allow it, and you must give way to traffic in the lane.

Tips

  • Check whether the sign shows only a bus or both a bus and a taxi; 508.1 applies only to the bus-only variant.
  • Always read the supplementary plate, especially if you are driving an electric car, as access may be time-limited or prohibited altogether.
  • Plan your right turn well in advance, but wait to cross the bus lane until the road markings allow it.
  • Check your mirrors and blind spot carefully before crossing the lane; buses, motorcycles and bicycles may approach quickly from behind.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that taxis can always use all bus lanes. With sign 508.1, taxis are not included simply because the vehicle is a taxi.
  • !Assuming that all electric cars always have access. A supplementary plate may introduce restrictions that also apply to electric cars.
  • !Confusing a bus lane with a high-occupancy vehicle lane, where an ordinary car may drive if it has enough occupants.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive an ordinary petrol or diesel car in the lane to get past a queue?

No. An ordinary passenger car may not use the bus lane simply to get ahead more quickly, even if the lane is empty.

Can an electric car use a bus lane marked with 508.1?

Yes, as a general rule, electric and hydrogen-powered motor vehicles may use a bus lane. However, you must follow any supplementary plate that restricts or prohibits such use.

Can a taxi use this bus lane?

No, not solely because it is a taxi. Lanes that are also intended for taxis are indicated by sign 508.2.

Can I cross the bus lane when I am turning right?

Yes, provided that the road markings and signs allow you to cross the lane. You must change lanes safely and give way to vehicles and cyclists already in the bus lane.
