Motorway (Motorveg) (502)

Motorway (Motorveg)

Information Signs Sign number: 502

The sign indicates that the provisions of the traffic rules concerning motorveg apply from the sign up to sign 504 “End of motorveg”, sign 503 “Motortrafikkveg” or the junction between an exit road from motorveg and a road that is not motorveg.

When you see the sign

From this sign, the special rules for motorways apply. Check that the vehicle is permitted to drive there, adjust your speed to the posted speed limit and traffic conditions, and use the entry lane to find a safe gap.

Rules

  • The motorway rules apply from the sign until sign 504 «Slutt på motorveg», sign 503 «Motortrafikkveg», or an intersection between an exit road from the motorway and a road that is not a motorway.
  • Only motor vehicles or vehicle combinations that can legally be driven at at least 40 km/h on a level road may be used on a motorway. This excludes, among others, pedestrians, cyclists and moped riders.
  • It is prohibited to turn around, reverse, stop or park on a motorway, unless stopping is necessary because of traffic, an emergency or another legal requirement.
  • You may enter or leave a motorway only at places designated for this purpose.
  • The sign does not set the speed limit. If no other speed limit is posted, the general speed limit outside built-up areas is 80 km/h.

Tips

  • Increase your speed in the entry lane so that it matches the traffic on the motorway, and check your mirrors and blind spot before merging.
  • Plan your exit early, move into the correct lane and normally do not reduce your speed until you are in the exit lane.
  • In the event of a breakdown, you should, if possible, move the vehicle completely off the carriageway, switch on the hazard warning lights and put yourself in a safe place.
  • Always look for separate speed-limit signs; the motorway sign does not automatically mean that you may drive at 110 km/h.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the sign automatically sets a speed limit of 110 km/h. An unmarked motorway normally has a speed limit of 80 km/h outside built-up areas.
  • !Confusing the sign with sign 503 «Motortrafikkveg», which introduces the rules for a Motortrafikkveg.
  • !Assuming that it is permitted to reverse along the shoulder if you have passed your exit. Reversing and turning around are prohibited; you must continue to the next exit.

Theory test tip

A common trap is to associate the sign directly with 110 km/h. In the theory test, you must distinguish between the type of road, which this sign indicates, and the speed limit, which is determined by separate speed-limit signs or the general limit.

Did you know

The motorway rules may end without you passing sign 504. They also end at sign 503 or when an exit road meets a road that is not a motorway.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sign mean that the speed limit is 110 km/h?

No. The sign introduces the motorway rules but does not set the speed limit. Follow the posted speed limit; without other signs, the general limit outside built-up areas is 80 km/h.

Can a moped drive on this road?

No, mopeds are not permitted on motorways. The same applies, among others, to pedestrians and cyclists.

What should I do if I pass my exit?

Continue to the next exit and find a legal route back. You must never reverse, turn around or drive against the direction of traffic on the motorway.

When do the rules introduced by the sign end?

They apply until sign 504 «Slutt på motorveg», sign 503 «Motortrafikkveg», or an intersection between an exit road and a road that is not a motorway. An ordinary road junction on the stretch itself therefore does not necessarily end the rules.
