One-way traffic (526.1)

One-way traffic

Information Signs Sign number: 526.1

The sign indicates that driving is permitted only in the direction of the arrow up to the first road junction.

When you see the sign

Drive only in the direction of the arrow. This applies up to the first intersection, where you must follow the signs and road markings from there.

Rules

  • Driving is permitted only in the direction shown by the arrow.
  • The sign applies up to the first intersection.
  • You must not turn around or drive backwards in such a way that you continue against the direction of the arrow.
  • The sign does not give you priority and does not set a speed limit.

Tips

  • Check the direction of the arrow immediately, especially when turning into an unfamiliar street.
  • Move into the correct lane early before the next intersection if the street has multiple lanes.
  • Look for new signs and road markings at the first intersection, because one-way traffic does not automatically continue beyond the intersection.
  • Be alert for cyclists and other traffic that may be specifically permitted to travel in the opposite direction.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that the one-way traffic regulation applies all the way to a separate end sign. It ends at the first intersection unless it is signed again.
  • !Thinking that the sign gives you priority at intersections. Normal give-way rules and other signs still apply.
  • !Confusing the sign with a mandatory sign that only determines which direction you must choose at the intersection itself.

Did you know

The sign is often placed at the entrance to a one-way street for traffic travelling in the permitted direction. At the opposite end, the sign «Innkjøring forbudt» is normally used to prevent traffic from entering against the direction of travel.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the arrow direction apply?

It applies up to the first intersection. Beyond the intersection, you must look for new signs and road markings.

Can I turn around and drive back the same way?

No, not if that means driving against the direction of the arrow on the section where the sign applies. You must find a legal route back via other streets.

Do I automatically have priority because the street is one-way?

No. The sign regulates the direction of travel, not the give-way rules, so you must follow give-way signs, traffic lights and the general give-way rules.

Can some road users approach from the opposite direction?

This may occur if specifically permitted by signs or road markings, for example for cyclists. You must therefore continue to pay close attention to the traffic around you.
