Arrow direction sign to an Autobahn

When you see the Zeichen
Move into the indicated lane early enough if you want to drive to the Autobahn, and pay attention to road markings and other traffic signs. The sign only indicates the way to the Autobahn; the special Autobahn rules apply only from Zeichen 405 “Autobahn” onward.
Rules
- Zeichen 430 indicates the direction to an Autobahn and does not require you to follow that direction.
- The sign indicates neither the start of the Autobahn nor an Autobahn entrance; Zeichen 405 is decisive for the start of the Autobahn.
- The signpost alone does not establish any special speed rule; until the actual start of the Autobahn, the rules and signs of the road you are travelling on apply.
- When turning in the indicated direction, you must give due consideration to oncoming traffic, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as any traffic lights, road markings and Vorfahrt signs.
- The blue design distinguishes directions to the Autobahn from yellow arrow signposts on federal roads and white arrow signposts on other roads.
Tips
- Pay attention to the direction of the arrow early on, and move into the corresponding lane only if you actually want to drive to the Autobahn.
- Do not confuse the blue direction sign with the start of the Autobahn, and do not accelerate to Autobahn speeds prematurely.
- In addition to the destination name, check whether an Autobahn number is shown so that you do not drive to the wrong interchange.
- Expect further direction signs, an entrance and finally Zeichen 405 along the rest of the route.
Common misunderstandings
- Learner drivers assume that the Autobahn rules already apply from Zeichen 430 onward. In fact, it is only a directional signpost.
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 405 “Autobahn”, even though Zeichen 405 marks the start of the special Autobahn rules.
- The blue colour is interpreted as requiring a specific speed. However, Zeichen 430 does not specify a speed.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap is whether the recommended speed of 130 km/h or the Autobahn rules already apply from this sign onward. The correct answer is no: Zeichen 430 only indicates the way; Zeichen 405 is decisive for the start of the Autobahn.
Did you know
Zeichen 430 can appear well before an interchange on a normal road, either inside or outside a built-up area. Its blue design identifies the route to the Autobahn, even though you are not yet on the Autobahn at this point.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the arrow on Zeichen 430?
No. The sign indicates the direction to the Autobahn but does not prescribe a direction of travel. Follow it only if it corresponds to your destination.
Does the Autobahn begin at Zeichen 430?
No. The start of the Autobahn is indicated by Zeichen 405. Until then, the rules and speed limits of the respective road apply.
May I drive at 130 km/h immediately after Zeichen 430?
No. Zeichen 430 does not cancel any existing speed limit. In addition, the recommended speed of 130 km/h is not a speed prescribed by this sign.
How does Zeichen 430 differ from Zeichen 415 and 418?
Zeichen 430 specifically indicates the way to the Autobahn. Zeichen 415 is an arrow signpost on federal roads with a yellow background, while Zeichen 418 is generally an arrow signpost with a white background on other roads.
