Advance direction sign to an Autobahn
Download Teorio and practise for the theory exam.
When you see the Zeichen
Look out for the indicated destinations and arrows early on, and move into the appropriate lane in good time if you want to drive to the Autobahn. Continue to observe the applicable Vorfahrt and speed regulations, as the sign itself does not yet mark the beginning of the Autobahn.
Rules
- Zeichen 440 gives advance notice of the route to an Autobahn.
- The arrows shown indicate the intersection or turn-off where you must drive in the direction of the Autobahn.
- The sign does not require any particular direction of travel or use of the Autobahn; you may also choose another signposted destination.
- Autobahn rules apply only from Zeichen 330.1 “Autobahn”, not from Zeichen 440.
Tips
- First read the desired destination, then follow the corresponding arrow instead of relying only on the blue design.
- Move into the appropriate lane early, but only after checking your mirrors, looking over your shoulder and signalling.
- Pay attention to any distance shown, as the actual turning point may still be ahead.
- After turning, check the further signs, as there may still be additional intersections or access roads before the beginning of the Autobahn.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 330.1 and incorrectly regarded as the beginning of the Autobahn.
- Learners believe they must turn immediately at the sign, even though an advance direction sign only announces the route in good time.
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 405; Zeichen 405 identifies an Autobahn by its number, while Zeichen 440 shows the way to it.
Exam tip
A typical exam trick is asking whether Autobahn rules and the advisory speed of 130 km/h already apply from Zeichen 440. This is incorrect: Zeichen 330.1 marks the beginning of the Autobahn.
Did you know
Zeichen 440 is typically located in the road network before an intersection or turn-off leading to an Autobahn. There may still be further sections of road between the advance direction sign and the actual beginning of the Autobahn.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the indicated direction to the Autobahn?
No. Zeichen 440 provides directions and does not require you to drive to the Autobahn; you may follow another permitted direction.
Does the Autobahn already begin at Zeichen 440?
No. The beginning of an Autobahn is marked by Zeichen 330.1, whereas Zeichen 440 merely gives advance notice of the route to the Autobahn.
May I immediately drive at 130 km/h after Zeichen 440?
No. The speed limits ordered for the current road section or the general speed limits continue to apply; 130 km/h is also an advisory speed, not a speed permitted by Zeichen 440.
What is the difference between Zeichen 440 and Zeichen 405?
Zeichen 440 is an advance direction sign and shows the route to the Autobahn. Zeichen 405, on the other hand, identifies an Autobahn by its number.
