When you see the Zeichen

Identify the destinations shown and the schematic layout of the upcoming intersection or junction in good time. Move into the appropriate lane early without obstructing others, and also pay attention to road markings, traffic lights and Vorfahrt signs.

Rules

  • Zeichen 438 gives advance notice of the route through an upcoming intersection or junction.
  • The arrows shown indicate the schematic road layout leading to the stated destinations; they do not necessarily represent the intersection to scale.
  • The sign itself regulates neither Vorfahrt nor speed, and it does not override any other traffic signs or road markings.
  • A direction shown on the advance direction sign does not automatically require you to turn; however, lane arrows, traffic lights or other traffic signs may be mandatory.
  • Additional road numbers or symbols help you follow the desired Bundesstraße, Autobahn or other route.

Tips

  • First look for your destination or road number, then follow the corresponding arrow to the intersection.
  • Move into the appropriate lane early if the advance direction sign and road markings indicate which lane leads to your destination.
  • Pay attention to whether the arrow indicates a turn or merely a curve in the Vorfahrtstraße or main route.
  • If your destination is not shown, continue in a controlled manner and use the next direction sign for guidance instead of changing lanes at short notice.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The advance direction sign is confused with an exit sign. Zeichen 438 shows the route through an upcoming junction, whereas Zeichen 332 or 332.1 indicates an exit.
  • !Learners interpret the arrows as mandatory directions of travel. However, mandatory directions of travel are indicated in particular by prescribed direction signs, traffic lights and road markings.
  • !The schematic representation is understood as a scale drawing of the intersection, leading to incorrect estimates of distances or angles.

Exam tip

In exam questions, it is often crucial to understand that Zeichen 438 serves only for route guidance. You must not infer from it any Vorfahrt rule, speed limit or independently mandatory direction of travel.

Did you know

Zeichen 438 is designed as a schematic advance direction sign: unlike an arrow direction sign located directly at the junction, it shows the layout of the upcoming intersection in advance, making it easier to choose the correct lane in good time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to follow the direction shown on Zeichen 438?

No. The advance direction sign provides information about the destinations that can be reached and the road layout. A direction of travel becomes mandatory only through the relevant traffic signs, traffic signals or road markings.

Does the advance direction sign regulate Vorfahrt at the announced intersection?

No. Vorfahrt is determined by the Vorfahrt signs present there, a traffic light or the general Vorfahrt rules.

What is the difference between Zeichen 438 and an arrow direction sign?

Zeichen 438 is positioned before the junction and shows its layout schematically. Arrow direction signs such as Zeichen 415 or 418 are typically located at the junction and point directly in the respective direction.

Does Zeichen 438 show the actual distances and intersection angles precisely?

No. The illustration is intended for orientation and is schematic. For the specific manoeuvre, the visible road layout, road markings and other traffic signs are decisive.
