When you see the Zeichen

Use the number shown to choose the correct Autobahn or route. The sign alone neither requires a change of speed nor indicates the beginning of an Autobahn.

Rules

  • Zeichen 405 identifies an Autobahn by its Autobahn number.
  • The sign is used solely for route guidance and, by itself, establishes no requirements or prohibitions.
  • The beginning of an Autobahn is indicated not by Zeichen 405, but by Zeichen 330.1.
  • An Autobahn number shown on other direction signs indicates which direction leads to that Autobahn or continues along it.
  • Posted speed limits and other traffic signs apply regardless of the Autobahn number.

Tips

  • Before setting off, remember not only your destination but also the Autobahn number and direction you need.
  • At Autobahn interchanges, check whether the number continues straight ahead or is reached via a slip road.
  • Move into the correct lane in good time by following the direction signs instead of waiting until just before the exit to look for the Autobahn number.
  • Do not confuse the blue Autobahn identification with the yellow identification of a federal highway or the green European route number.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Zeichen 405 is confused with Zeichen 330.1, which indicates the beginning of an Autobahn. The Autobahn number alone does not put the special Autobahn rules into effect.
  • !Learner drivers mistake the number shown for a speed limit. It is actually the Autobahn number.
  • !The Autobahn number is confused with Zeichen 406. Zeichen 406 identifies a numbered Autobahn interchange, not the Autobahn itself.

Exam tip

In exam questions, watch out for the trap of interpreting Zeichen 405 as the beginning of an Autobahn. Only Zeichen 330.1 indicates the beginning of an Autobahn; Zeichen 405 merely identifies the route.

Did you know

The German Autobahn numbering system is largely geographically organised: one- and two-digit numbers usually identify major long-distance routes, while three-digit numbers often identify regional routes, feeder roads or sections of a route.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to change my speed at Zeichen 405?

No. The sign does not impose a speed requirement; the traffic signs actually in force and the rules applying to the road you are on are what matter.

Does an Autobahn automatically begin at Zeichen 405?

No. Zeichen 405 identifies a route, whereas the beginning of an Autobahn is indicated by Zeichen 330.1.

How does Zeichen 405 differ from Zeichen 401?

Zeichen 405 identifies an Autobahn number and is shown in blue. Zeichen 401, on the other hand, identifies a federal highway and displays a black number on a yellow background.

What is the difference between Zeichen 405 and Zeichen 406?

Zeichen 405 gives the number of an Autobahn. Zeichen 406 gives the number of a specific Autobahn interchange, such as a junction, an Autobahnkreuz or an Autobahndreieck.
