When you see the Zeichen
Use the stated destination as your guide and follow the arrow direction only if you want to travel to that destination. Move into the correct lane in good time, taking lane markings, traffic lights and right-of-way signs into account; the direction sign itself does not give you right of way.
Rules
- Zeichen 432 uses an arrow-shaped direction sign to indicate the direction to a destination of significant importance to traffic, such as a railway station, town centre or important public facility.
- The sign is used solely for orientation and does not require you to drive in the direction shown.
- Zeichen 432 does not indicate a speed limit, right-of-way rule or mandatory turn.
- When turning, all existing traffic lights, right-of-way signs, lane markings and general turning regulations continue to apply.
Tips
- Read the destination name first and then check the arrow direction so that you do not accidentally follow a direction sign to a different destination.
- Move into the appropriate lane early, without endangering others by braking suddenly or changing lanes abruptly.
- Also pay attention to mandatory directions and lane arrows; they are more relevant to how you must drive than the destination information alone.
- Do not confuse the usually white direction sign to a destination with the yellow arrow direction signs for the interurban road network or the blue direction signs to the Autobahn.
Common misunderstandings
- Learner drivers mistake the arrow shape for a mandatory turn. However, Zeichen 432 only shows where the named destination is located.
- Some assume that the direction sign gives them right of way when turning. Right of way is determined by other traffic signs, traffic lights or the general rule of priority to the right.
- Zeichen 432 is confused with Zeichen 415 or 418; those signs provide direction guidance within the road network, whereas Zeichen 432 specifically leads to a destination of significant importance to traffic.
Exam tip
The typical trap in exam questions is to interpret the arrow as a mandatory direction of travel or a right-of-way entitlement. The correct answer is: the arrow only indicates the way to the named destination; when turning, traffic lights, right-of-way signs and road markings remain decisive.
Did you know
Under the StVO, Zeichen 432 belongs to the Richtzeichen. It is often used for important destinations within a town or destinations of local significance, helping drivers unfamiliar with the area find central facilities.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the arrow on Zeichen 432?
No. You only follow it if you want to reach the stated destination; it does not create a mandatory turn.
Does Zeichen 432 give me right of way when turning?
No. The sign does not regulate right of way, so you must observe traffic lights, right-of-way signs and, where applicable, the general rule of priority to the right.
How does Zeichen 432 differ from Zeichen 415?
Zeichen 432 directs you to a destination of significant importance to traffic. Zeichen 415, on the other hand, is an arrow direction sign on federal roads and forms part of the corresponding route direction system.
May I change lanes at short notice because of the direction sign?
Only if it is safe to do so and lane boundaries or other instructions do not prohibit the change. If you moved into the correct lane too late, you should continue safely and choose a different route.
