When you see the Zeichen
The signposted diversion ends here. Move into the appropriate lane for your onward destination without turning suddenly, and follow the regular directional signs again.
Rules
- Zeichen 455.2 marks only the end of the signposted diversion route.
- The sign does not require any particular direction of travel or a turn.
- Speed limits, Vorfahrt rules and other traffic signs remain in effect.
- The sign does not cancel a road closure; closed roads may only be used once the closure has actually ended or been lifted.
Tips
- After passing the sign, pay particular attention to the regular directional signs to your destination, as the diversion signs will no longer continue.
- Change lanes in good time and only while taking the rest of the traffic into account if you need to turn after the diversion ends.
- Do not rely solely on your navigation device; check whether its route is compatible with the current traffic signs.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with an Autobahn or Kraftfahrstraße exit sign; however, it does not announce an exit.
- Some learner drivers believe that the end of the diversion also automatically cancels speed limits or other restrictions applying to the route.
- The sign is incorrectly understood as an instruction to turn immediately or return to the original road.
Exam tip
The typical trap in exam questions is to attribute an additional effect to the sign: it only ends the diversion and cancels neither a speed limit nor a closure or no-overtaking restriction.
Did you know
Zeichen 455.2 is typically placed where a temporarily established diversion route rejoins the regular road network or the normal directional signage.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to turn at Zeichen 455.2?
No. The sign merely indicates that the signposted diversion ends; the direction you continue in depends on your destination and the other traffic signs.
Can I automatically drive on the road that was originally closed now?
No. An existing closure is not cancelled by Zeichen 455.2. The decisive factors are the prohibition and closure signs installed on the road in question.
Does a previously imposed speed limit end along with the diversion?
Not automatically. A speed limit ends only according to the applicable rules, for example through a cancellation sign, another speed restriction or the clearly identifiable end of its area of validity.
How does Zeichen 455.2 differ from an exit sign?
An exit sign announces an exit from an Autobahn, Kraftfahrstraße or similarly developed road. Zeichen 455.2, by contrast, only informs you that the temporarily signposted diversion route has ended.
