When you see the Zeichen

If you have to leave the Autobahn because of a closure or major disruption, you can follow the indicated emergency diversion route. At every subsequent intersection, look for the same diversion number and follow the arrows to the designated Autobahn interchange.

Rules

  • Zeichen 460 indicates an alternative route through the subordinate road network between Autobahn interchanges.
  • The number shown is used to clearly identify the emergency diversion route and must match the number on the following signs.
  • The sign itself does not require you to use the route; however, a closure or an instruction from the police may make it impossible to continue on the previous route.
  • The speed limits and Vorfahrt rules applicable to the roads you are using apply on the emergency diversion route.

Tips

  • Remember the emergency diversion number so that you do not accidentally follow a different route at intersections.
  • Expect to pass through built-up areas and encounter traffic lights, narrow carriageways and significantly lower speeds than on the Autobahn.
  • Follow the signposted route carefully even if your navigation system suggests a different route.
  • Move into the appropriate lane early before intersections, in accordance with the direction arrow on the sign.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Zeichen 460 is confused with an ordinary diversion set up only temporarily; emergency diversion routes are generally signposted permanently and are intended for disruptions on the Autobahn.
  • !Some learner drivers believe that the number on the sign is a road number or interchange number. In fact, it identifies the particular emergency diversion route.
  • !The sign is mistakenly understood as an Autobahn direction sign, even though the signposted route leads through the subordinate road network.

Exam tip

In the exam, you may be asked whether Zeichen 460 indicates an alternative route between Autobahn interchanges or a normal Autobahn exit. The correct answer is the alternative route through the subordinate road network; it must not be confused with the exit signs for Zeichen 332 and 332.1.

Did you know

Emergency diversion routes are permanently established, particularly around Autobahns. They usually lead from one interchange via roads in the subordinate network to a subsequent interchange, ensuring that a prepared alternative route is available in the event of a disruption.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to follow an emergency diversion route?

No. Zeichen 460 is a direction sign and, by itself, does not create an obligation to use the route. However, if the previous route is closed or the diversion is ordered by the police or through traffic control measures, you must follow those instructions.

What does the number on the sign indicate?

The number identifies a particular emergency diversion route. Follow signs with the same number along the entire alternative route.

Does the emergency diversion route lead back to the same Autobahn?

It generally connects Autobahn interchanges via the subordinate road network. This allows you to bypass a disrupted or closed section of the Autobahn and rejoin it at a later interchange.

What speed applies on the emergency diversion route?

The sign itself does not specify a speed. The limits imposed on the alternative route apply; in the absence of specific signs, the general limits for passenger cars are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside built-up areas.
