When you see the Zeichen
Take note of the announced destinations, the junction number and, where applicable, the distance. If you want to leave there or change Autobahn, follow the subsequent route guidance and move into the correct lane in good time without changing lanes abruptly.
Rules
- Zeichen 448 announces an Autobahn exit, interchange or junction.
- The sign contains the junction number following Zeichen 406; this provides unambiguous orientation.
- Zeichen 448 neither requires you to leave the Autobahn nor prescribes a particular speed.
- A stated distance indicates the remaining distance to the announced junction.
- The general rules continue to apply when changing lanes later: signal in good time, monitor traffic behind you and do not endanger anyone.
Tips
- Compare the destination and junction number with your planned route at an early stage.
- Initially remain calmly in your lane and follow the subsequent route signs and lane arrows.
- Begin changing lanes in good time, but do not do so abruptly or across several lanes.
- If you miss the exit, continue to the next suitable junction; never stop on the carriageway or drive backwards.
Common misunderstandings
- Zeichen 448 is confused with Zeichen 332: Zeichen 448 announces the junction in advance, while Zeichen 332 marks the exit at the Autobahn.
- The junction number is mistakenly taken to be an Autobahn or European route number. It identifies the respective slip road junction, Autobahn interchange or motorway triangle.
- Some learner drivers believe they must move into the right-hand lane immediately. The sign initially provides information; the subsequent route guidance and a safe choice of lane are what matter.
Exam tip
In exam questions, pay attention to the difference between an advance announcement and the actual exit: Zeichen 448 provides early information about an upcoming Autobahn junction, but neither requires you to leave nor to change lanes immediately.
Did you know
The junction number following Zeichen 406, which is included in Zeichen 448, not only makes navigation easier but also allows an unambiguous location to be given, for example in the event of a breakdown or emergency call.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to leave the Autobahn at Zeichen 448?
No. The sign merely announces an exit, Autobahn interchange or motorway triangle; you may continue on the Autobahn.
What does the small number on the sign mean?
It is the junction number following Zeichen 406. It clearly identifies the relevant slip road junction, Autobahn interchange or motorway triangle.
Does Zeichen 448 impose a lower speed?
No, Zeichen 448 does not by itself impose a speed limit. A lower maximum speed applies only if it is prescribed by a corresponding traffic sign.
How does Zeichen 448 differ from an exit sign on other roads?
Zeichen 448 is used to announce junctions on Autobahnen. Zeichen 332.1, on the other hand, concerns exits from Kraftfahrstraßen or motorway-style roads.
