When you see the Zeichen
Take note of the tourist information and continue driving at a steady speed. The sign neither requires you to turn nor to change speed; if you want to visit the destination, you must follow the regular directional signs to a suitable exit.
Rules
- Zeichen 386.3 is placed on Autobahnen and provides information about destinations of tourist interest.
- The sign contains no instruction and does not, in particular, impose a speed limit.
- It is neither an exit sign nor an advance direction sign; the regular direction signs are decisive when leaving the Autobahn.
- The sign neither permits stopping on the Seitenstreifen nor turning around or reversing to reach the destination shown.
Tips
- Read the panel only if you can do so without being distracted from the traffic for any significant length of time.
- Do not reduce your speed abruptly just to look at the text or image more closely.
- If you want to visit the destination, follow the regular signs afterwards and use only a designated exit.
Common misunderstandings
- The brown panel is mistaken for an exit announcement, even though it only provides tourist information.
- Learner drivers assume that a tourist route automatically begins at the sign; other signs are used for this purpose.
- Some people believe they must drive more slowly or turn immediately because of the panel. Zeichen 386.3 contains no such instruction.
Exam tip
In exam questions, watch out for the trap of treating the sign as a direction sign or a speed instruction. The correct key statement is: It provides information about a destination of tourist interest without prescribing a specific driving manoeuvre.
Did you know
Tourist information panels are typically brown and often combine the name of a destination of tourist interest with an illustration. Despite their distinctive design, they are not part of the actual Autobahn direction signage.
