Water protection area

When you see the Zeichen
You are entering a water protection area and must take particular care to prevent any water-polluting substances such as fuel, oil or chemicals from leaking. Pay close attention to warning indicators and, in the event of a leak or accident, stop safely, secure the scene and immediately notify the fire service or police via 112.
Rules
- Zeichen 354 identifies a water protection area, but by itself it neither prohibits entry nor imposes a specific speed limit.
- Vehicles carrying water-polluting cargo may generally continue driving, unless an additional prohibition, in particular Zeichen 269, has been imposed.
- Fuel, oil, chemicals and other water-polluting substances must not enter the soil, sewage system or bodies of water.
- In the event of an accident or a leak threatening to release substances, the danger area must be secured and help must be requested immediately via 112.
Tips
- In a water protection area, pay particular attention to warning lights for oil pressure, coolant and the fuel system, as well as unusual smells or visible traces of liquid.
- Do not park a vehicle with an apparent leak on unpaved ground, and do not continue driving with a leak.
- If liquid is leaking, avoid contact with it and tell the emergency services dispatcher as precisely as possible which substance is involved and where you are.
- Watch for additional traffic signs: only another sign can, for example, prohibit the passage of certain vehicles carrying dangerous goods.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is mistakenly thought to prohibit tanker vehicles. Such a prohibition is imposed by Zeichen 269, not by Zeichen 354.
- Some driving students assume that a lower maximum speed automatically applies in a water protection area. However, Zeichen 354 does not set its own speed limit.
- The pictogram is misunderstood as indicating a filling station; in fact, it warns of the particular consequences of leaking water-polluting substances.
Exam tip
In the theory test, the typical trap is confusing Zeichen 354 with a prohibition on passing through for vehicles carrying water-polluting cargo. Remember: Zeichen 354 provides information and urges particular caution; the corresponding prohibition is Zeichen 269.
Did you know
Zeichen 354 is often placed at the boundaries of protected areas for groundwater and drinking-water extraction facilities. The tanker vehicle shown above water waves draws particular attention to the danger posed by leaking fuel or chemicals.
Frequently asked questions
Am I allowed to drive into the water protection area in a normal passenger car?
Yes. Zeichen 354 does not prohibit entry; however, you must take particular care to prevent fuel, oil or any other water-polluting substance from leaking.
Does Zeichen 354 automatically impose a speed limit?
No. The sign does not impose a specific maximum speed; the general rules and any additional speed-limit signs that have been put up are decisive.
Is a tanker vehicle allowed to pass this sign?
Generally yes, because Zeichen 354 is not a prohibition on passing through. If Zeichen 269 is also in place, vehicles carrying cargo containing water-polluting substances that requires labelling may not use the road.
What should I do if fuel leaks in the water protection area?
Stop safely, switch off the engine and secure the danger area without putting yourself at risk. Immediately notify the fire service or police via 112 and prevent the leak from spreading further only if this can be done safely.
