When you see the Zeichen

The sign indicates a police station or a corresponding police facility. If you need the police, follow the sign only if you can turn or stop safely; otherwise, continue driving while observing the traffic rules that applied before.

Rules

  • Zeichen 363 is an informational sign and, by itself, does not impose a requirement, prohibition or prescribed driving manoeuvre.
  • The sign does not change the maximum permitted speed, Vorfahrt or priority.
  • You do not have to stop or report to the police at this sign.
  • The sign does not permit parking in front of the police station; the existing stopping and parking regulations apply.
  • Signs or instructions from police officers must be followed independently of Zeichen 363 and take precedence over other traffic regulations.

Tips

  • Do not confuse the police star shown on the sign with the red cross on Zeichen 358 “First aid”.
  • If you want to drive to the police station, signal in good time and pay particular attention to police vehicle entrances and exits.
  • Do not suddenly stop on the carriageway to examine the sign or the location of the police station more closely.
  • In an acute emergency, you should call the police emergency number 110 rather than first looking for a signposted police station.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Some learner drivers think the sign instructs them to stop immediately or indicates that they should expect a check. It merely identifies the police or a police station.
  • !The sign is occasionally confused with “First aid”. Zeichen 363 shows the police symbol, whereas Zeichen 358 is marked with a red cross.
  • !A common mistake is to assume that short-term parking is automatically permitted in front of the police station. However, the sign does not create an exception to stopping or parking restrictions.

Exam tip

In the theory test, the trap may be to attribute a requirement to stop or a speed restriction to the sign. The correct interpretation is: it provides information about the police, but by itself does not prescribe any particular driving behaviour.

Did you know

Zeichen 363 is one of the informational signs in Anlage 3 to the StVO. Unlike many other traffic signs, the StVO contains no additional explanation for it; its meaning follows directly from the police symbol and the designation “Police”.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop at Zeichen 363?

No. The sign merely indicates the police or a police station and does not create an obligation to stop.

Does the sign announce a police check?

No. It identifies the police or the location of a police station, but says nothing about an imminent traffic check.

Am I allowed to park in front of the police station?

Only if the general and locally signposted parking rules permit it. Zeichen 363 itself does not grant permission to park and does not cancel any stopping or parking restrictions.

Does the sign change Vorfahrt or the speed limit?

No. Vorfahrt and the permitted speed continue to be governed by the other traffic signs and the general regulations.
