When you see the Zeichen

The sign indicates a location or facility where first aid is available. If you need help, drive there or stop only if it is safe and permitted under the general traffic rules; in an acute emergency, also call 112.

Rules

  • Zeichen 358 is an information sign indicating an opportunity to receive first aid.
  • The sign neither grants permission to stop or park nor requires you to stop there.
  • It does not automatically indicate a hospital, doctor's office or permanently staffed emergency station.
  • The sign does not change Vorfahrt, the speed limit or the direction of travel.

Tips

  • Remember the first-aid symbol as indicating a place where help is available, not the police or traffic assistants.
  • Reduce your speed only if you actually intend to use the first-aid facility and the traffic situation requires it.
  • When turning or stopping, watch out for following traffic and use only permitted access routes or parking facilities.
  • In life-threatening situations, do not rely solely on the signposted facility; call the emergency services via 112.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The sign is mistakenly understood as an instruction to stop immediately or provide first aid.
  • !Learner drivers confuse the indicated first-aid facility with a hospital or emergency station.
  • !Some assume that the sign allows them to stop directly in front of it; however, the general stopping and parking regulations continue to apply.

Exam tip

In the exam, the trap may be to interpret the sign as an instruction. The correct answer is: It indicates an opportunity to receive first aid, but it neither changes Vorfahrt or the permitted speed nor creates any special permission to stop.
