When you see the Zeichen
Use the sign as a guide to the further course of a tourist route and pay attention to the direction shown. If you want to follow the route, move into the appropriate lane in good time while observing the regular traffic signs; the sign does not require you to turn.
Rules
- Zeichen 386.2 marks the course of a tourist route.
- The sign is for information only and does not impose any requirement or prohibition.
- A direction shown indicates the route taken by the tourist route, but does not prescribe a direction of travel.
- Speed limits, Vorfahrt rules and other traffic signs continue to apply regardless of Zeichen 386.2.
Tips
- Pay attention to directional information early if you want to follow the tourist route.
- Do not confuse the sign with a mandatory turn; before changing lanes, check your mirrors and do a shoulder check.
- At places of tourist interest, expect slow-moving, disoriented or suddenly turning road users.
Common misunderstandings
- Learner drivers regard the direction shown as a mandatory instruction. However, Zeichen 386.2 merely recommends or indicates the course of the route.
- The sign is confused with an indication of a single excursion destination. It identifies a tourist route that may extend over several sections of road.
- Some people assume that a special speed limit automatically applies on the route. The sign does not impose any speed limit.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap is the question of whether you must follow the course shown. The correct answer is: The sign provides information about a tourist route, but it neither prescribes a direction of travel nor establishes special Vorfahrt or speed-limit rules.
Did you know
Zeichen 386.2 is part of the brown-and-white tourist signage used in Germany. Such routes may, for example, identify scenic routes or roads of cultural significance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the tourist route?
No. Zeichen 386.2 is for information and does not require you to follow the route or turn.
Is there a special maximum speed on a tourist route?
No. The general speed limits or those imposed by other traffic signs apply.
Does the tourist route have Vorfahrt at intersections?
No. The sign does not give the route Vorfahrt; traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs or, if none apply, the rule rechts vor links are decisive.
How does Zeichen 386.2 differ from a tourist information sign?
Zeichen 386.2 guides road users along a tourist route. A tourist information sign, by contrast, typically draws attention to a specific destination or site of tourist interest.
