Prohibition of turning (330.1)

Prohibition of turning

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 330.1

The prohibition applies only to the intersection at which or near which the sign is placed, or possibly to the first intersection after the sign. A different area of application may be specified by a supplementary sign.

When you see the sign

You must not turn right at the intersection covered by the sign. Choose another legal route, such as continuing straight ahead or turning left, provided that other signs, road markings and traffic conditions allow it.

Rules

  • Skilt 330.1 prohibits turning right at the relevant intersection.
  • The prohibition applies only to the intersection where or beside which the sign is placed, or, where applicable, the first intersection after the sign.
  • The sign prohibits the right turn itself, not all further driving past the sign.
  • The prohibition also applies to cyclists, unless a supplementary plate or other regulation expressly provides an exception.
  • Instructions from the police or another person authorised to regulate traffic take precedence over the sign.

Tips

  • Look for the sign well in advance and position yourself in a lane that allows you to choose a legal direction.
  • Check whether a supplementary plate specifies a time period, vehicle group or other exceptions.
  • Do not wait until you are in the intersection to change your plan; instead, continue in a legal direction and find an alternative route.
  • Also follow lane arrows, traffic lights and other signs that may restrict which other directions you can choose.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people interpret the sign as «No entry». The sign only prohibits turning right at the specific intersection; it does not necessarily prohibit continuing straight past the sign.
  • !Some people think the prohibition applies to all subsequent intersections. It applies only to the intersection where or beside which the sign is placed, or, where applicable, the first intersection after the sign.
  • !Some people assume that cyclists can always turn right. A bicycle is a vehicle, so the prohibition also applies to cyclists unless an exception is indicated.
