Prohibited for all vehicles
The sign indicates that it is prohibited for all vehicles.
When you see the sign
You must not drive any vehicle further onto the road or into the area. Choose another legal route unless a supplementary plate expressly makes an exception for your vehicle or road-user group.
Rules
- The prohibition applies to all vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, mopeds, tractors, bicycles and small electric motor vehicles.
- Pedestrians are not covered by the sign because they are not operating a vehicle.
- A person walking a rented bicycle is considered a pedestrian and may normally pass if pedestrian access is permitted.
- A supplementary plate may limit the prohibition or provide an exception, for example for deliveries or access to specific properties.
Tips
- Check for a supplementary plate before choosing another route; it may state who the prohibition does not apply to or when it applies.
- Do not continue simply because the road looks open and passable.
- If you are cycling and want to pass, you must dismount and walk the bicycle, provided that pedestrians are allowed.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think the sign applies only to motor vehicles, but it also covers bicycles and small electric motor vehicles.
- The sign is confused with «Innkjøring forbudt», which prohibits driving past the sign but has a special rule that may permit cycling and using a small electric motor vehicle on the pavement.
- Some people think pedestrians are also prohibited, but that requires a separate prohibition or other regulation.

Theory test tip
A common trap on the theory test is to answer that the prohibition applies only to motor vehicles. Remember that the empty white area inside the red circle means that all vehicles are covered, including bicycles.
Did you know
Under the traffic regulations, a person walking a bicycle is considered a pedestrian. Therefore, the person may normally pass on foot even if cycling past the sign is not permitted.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive past in a car if I live along the road?
Not unless a supplementary plate or other valid regulation provides an exception, for example «Gjelder ikke kjøring til eiendommene». The fact that you live along the road does not automatically give you access.
Can I cycle past the sign?
No. A bicycle is a vehicle and is covered by the prohibition. You may normally dismount and walk the bicycle if pedestrians are allowed.
Can I use an electric scooter here?
No. An electric scooter classified as a small electric motor vehicle is a vehicle and is therefore covered by the prohibition unless a supplementary plate provides an exception.
What is the difference between this and the sign «Forbudt for motorvogn»?
This sign covers all vehicles, including bicycles. The sign «Forbudt for motorvogn med unntak av liten elektrisk motorvogn» applies to motor vehicles and expressly exempts small electric motor vehicles.
