Prohibited for motor vehicles except small electric motor vehicles
The sign indicates that it is prohibited for motor vehicles except small electric motor vehicles.
When you see the sign
You may not drive past the sign in a car or other motor vehicle. Choose another route unless a supplementary sign expressly provides an exception; small electric motor vehicles are already exempt.
Rules
- The prohibition applies to motor vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, lorries, motorcycles and mopeds.
- Small electric motor vehicles, such as an electric scooter that meets the requirements for this vehicle category, are exempt from the prohibition.
- Ordinary electric cars are covered by the prohibition; the exemption does not apply to all electric vehicles.
- Cycling and walking are not affected by this sign alone, but may be regulated by other signs or traffic rules.
Tips
- Look for supplementary signs that may limit the prohibition to certain times or provide exceptions for specific road users.
- Plan an alternative route before you reach the sign, so that you do not have to make a dangerous or illegal U-turn.
- Do not drive in even if your destination is just inside the area, unless a supplementary sign expressly permits it.
- Remember that an electric car is still a motor vehicle and is not considered a small electric motor vehicle.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the sign prohibits all vehicles, including bicycles and small electric motor vehicles.
- Thinking that the exemption for small electric motor vehicles also applies to electric cars, electric mopeds or electric motorcycles.
- Confusing the sign with «Innkjøring forbudt», which prohibits driving past the sign from the relevant direction regardless of vehicle type, subject to the specific exceptions in the sign regulations.

Pay close attention to the difference between a motor vehicle and a vehicle. An ordinary bicycle is a vehicle, but not a motor vehicle, whereas an electric car is a motor vehicle even though it is electrically powered.
Did you know
Small electric motor vehicles, such as electric scooters, were reclassified from bicycles to motor vehicles in Norway on 15 June 2022. This is why this vehicle category is expressly exempted on sign 306.1.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive past the sign in a passenger car if I live in the area?
No, not without a supplementary sign or other express regulation granting permission. There is no automatic exemption simply because you live there or have business in the area.
Can I pass with an electric scooter?
Yes, provided it meets the requirements for a small electric motor vehicle and no other signs or rules prohibit passage. You must still follow the rules governing where and how such vehicles may be used.
Can I drive past in an electric car?
No. An electric car is a motor vehicle, and the exemption applies only to vehicles legally classified as small electric motor vehicles.
Can I cycle past the sign?
Yes, the sign alone does not prohibit ordinary bicycles. Other signs, the road layout or other traffic rules may nevertheless restrict cycling.
