Prohibition of turning (330.2)

Prohibition of turning

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 330.2

The prohibition applies only to the intersection at which or near which the sign is placed, or possibly to the first intersection after the sign. A different area of application may be specified by a supplementary sign.

When you see the sign

You must not turn left at the intersection the sign applies to. Choose a permitted direction of travel well in advance, and follow any lane arrows or mandatory-direction signs.

Rules

  • Sign 330.2 prohibits turning left at the relevant intersection.
  • The prohibition applies only to the intersection where or beside which the sign is placed, or, if applicable, the first intersection after the sign.
  • Once you have passed the intersection the sign applies to, the prohibition ends without a separate end-of-prohibition sign.
  • The sign prohibits a specific turning movement and is not a general prohibition on entering or continuing along the road.

Tips

  • Look out for the sign early and position yourself in a lane that leads straight ahead or to the right.
  • Do not wait until the intersection itself to change lanes if the left-hand lane is used only for left turns.
  • If your destination is on the left, continue ahead and find a legal alternative route.
  • Pay attention to whether the sign is right next to the intersection or some distance before it; in the latter case, it normally applies to the first intersection after the sign.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that the sign means no entry. It only prohibits turning left at the relevant intersection.
  • !Thinking that the prohibition applies to all subsequent intersections along the road. It ends once the intersection the sign applies to has been passed.
  • !Following the navigation system's instruction to turn left even though the sign prohibits it.

In the theory test, the sign may be placed before the intersection rather than inside it. The trap is thinking that you can turn left at the first intersection because the sign is not positioned right at the corner.

Did you know

Turn prohibitions are often used where turning left could cause queues, conflicts with oncoming traffic, or dangerous crossings of several lanes. The restriction is local and relates to one specific intersection.

Frequently asked questions
