Stop for specified purpose
The sign indicates a prohibition against continuing to drive before a stop has been made for the purpose specified in text on the sign.
When you see the sign
You must come to a complete stop at the designated checkpoint and make the vehicle available for the inspection indicated on the sign. You may not continue driving until the required stop and inspection have been completed, and you must follow instructions from inspection personnel.
Rules
- The sign prohibits you from continuing until you have stopped for the specified inspection.
- The stop must be complete; slowing down or driving slowly past is not sufficient.
- You must stop at the stop line or another clearly designated inspection point. If there is no such point, stop at a suitable location by the sign or checkpoint.
- You must follow signals and instructions from the police, customs authorities or other personnel lawfully carrying out the inspection.
- The sign does not permanently prohibit you from continuing; you may proceed once the stop and the relevant inspection have been completed.
Tips
- Reduce your speed early and look for a stop line, barrier, booth, signals or inspection personnel.
- Position the vehicle so that inspection personnel can reach it without you blocking other lanes.
- Have any documents that may be requested readily available before you reach the checkpoint.
- Wait for a clear instruction or signal if inspection personnel are directing traffic.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think the sign means that entry is completely prohibited. Instead, it requires you to stop for an inspection before you may be allowed to continue.
- Some people confuse the sign with a standard stop sign and only look for crossing traffic. Here, the purpose is a designated inspection, not giving way at an intersection.
- It is incorrect to assume that a very low speed is sufficient; the vehicle must come to a complete stop.
Test yourself
Easy

Medium

- BI reduce my speed at the stop line and continue if the road is clear.
- CI turn around before the stop line because continuing is always prohibited.
- DI stop after the inspection site and wait for crossing traffic.
Hard
There is neither a stop line nor another clearly marked inspection point. How should you respond?
- AI stop completely at a suitable place by the sign or inspection site.
- BI stop only if the inspection personnel give me a clear signal.
- CI turn around because the lack of an inspection point means entry is prohibited.
- DI pass slowly because the duty to stop only applies where there is a stop line.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be to choose that the road is closed to all further traffic. The correct main rule is that you must stop for the specified inspection before you can continue.
Did you know
Skilt 324.1 is used at special inspection points, including locations where vehicles or documents must be checked. The text or symbol on the sign indicates the purpose of the stop, so its design may vary depending on the type of inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to stop even if the checkpoint appears to be unattended?
Yes, the sign requires a complete stop. Then look for signals, a barrier, notices or other instructions determining whether and how you may continue.
Is this the same as the «Innkjøring forbudt» sign?
No. «Innkjøring forbudt» prohibits driving past the sign from the relevant direction, whereas Skilt 324.1 requires you to stop for an inspection before continuing.
Where should I stop?
Stop at the stop line or the specially designated inspection point. If the location is not marked, stop at a suitable place by the sign or checkpoint without creating a hazard.
Can I continue as soon as the vehicle has come to a standstill?
Not necessarily. You must allow the specified inspection to take place and follow signals or instructions from the inspection personnel before continuing.
