No stopping (370)

No stopping

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 370

The sign indicates that stopping vehicles is prohibited on the side of the road where the sign is erected. The sign applies up to the nearest road junction, or until a new sign 370 “No stopping”, 372 “No parking”, 376 “Parking zone”, 378 “End of parking zone” or 552 “Parking”.

When you see the sign

You must not stop the vehicle on the side of the road where the sign is located, not even to let a passenger out or unload goods. Continue to a place where the prohibition does not apply, unless you have to stop because of traffic conditions or to avert danger.

Rules

  • The prohibition applies on the side of the road where the sign has been placed.
  • You may neither park nor make a voluntary brief stop, even if you remain seated in the vehicle.
  • Stopping is permitted when necessary because of traffic conditions, traffic lights, queues or to avert danger.
  • The prohibition normally applies from the sign to the nearest junction.
  • The prohibition may also end or be changed by a new sign 370, 372, 376, 378 or 552, and an additional sign may indicate a different extent.

Tips

  • Look for additional signs with arrows or distance information showing where the prohibition begins, applies or ends.
  • Find a legal place before letting passengers out or picking them up; even a very brief stop is prohibited.
  • Do not count a private entrance or exit as a junction that automatically ends the prohibition.
  • Remember the visual difference: a red cross means stopping is prohibited, while a single red diagonal line means parking is prohibited.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking it is permitted to stand for a moment if the engine is running or the driver is sitting behind the wheel.
  • !Confusing the sign with «Parkering forbudt», where the shortest possible stop to let passengers on or off, or to load or unload goods, may be permitted.
  • !Thinking that the sign prohibits continuing to drive, as with «Innkjøring forbudt».

Theory test tip

A common trap is an answer option saying that you can stop briefly to let a passenger out. This is not permitted here; distinguish between the red cross for a stopping prohibition and the single red diagonal line for a parking prohibition.

Did you know

The red cross distinguishes the sign from «Parkering forbudt», which has only one red diagonal line. The cross shows that the prohibition is stricter and also includes brief, voluntary stops.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop to let a passenger out?

No, not on the side of the road where the sign applies. You must find a place without a stopping prohibition before the passenger gets out.

Can I stop if the traffic ahead of me stops?

Yes. A stop that is necessary because of a queue, a red light or other traffic conditions is not considered a voluntary stop in violation of the sign.

How long does the prohibition apply?

It normally applies from the sign to the nearest junction. It may also end or be changed by a new relevant parking or stopping sign, and an additional sign may indicate a different extent.

Does the prohibition apply on both sides of the road?

No, the sign applies only on the side of the road where it has been placed. The other side must be assessed according to the signs and the other rules on stopping and parking.
