No parking (372)

No parking

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 372

The sign indicates that parking is prohibited on the side of the road where the sign is erected. The sign applies up to the nearest road junction, or until a new sign 372 “No parking”, 370 “No stopping”, 376 “Parking zone”, 378 “End of parking zone” or 552 “Parking”. 376.1 (Ex.) 376.2 (Ex.)

When you see the sign

You must not park on the side of the road where the sign is installed. You may normally stop for the shortest possible time to pick up or drop off passengers or to load or unload goods, but you must check any supplementary signs and make sure stopping is not prohibited by other rules.

Rules

  • The prohibition applies on the side of the road where the sign is installed, normally from the sign onwards in the direction of travel.
  • The prohibition applies until the nearest road junction or until a new sign 372, 370, 376, 378 or 552.
  • A supplementary sign may specify particular times, vehicle categories or the section of road to which the prohibition applies.
  • It is considered parking even if the driver remains in the vehicle. Stopping for the shortest possible time to pick up or drop off passengers or to load or unload goods is not considered parking.

Tips

  • Look for supplementary signs showing times, arrows or text before deciding to leave your car there.
  • Do not assume that a gate, exit or driveway to a property ends the prohibition; it is normally not a road junction.
  • If you are dropping off a passenger, do so without unnecessary waiting and drive on as soon as the passenger has got out.
  • Check whether other rules also prohibit stopping, for example at a pedestrian crossing, road junction or bus stop.

Common misconceptions

  • !Learners think that the sign prohibits all stopping. It prohibits parking, whereas sign 370 with a red cross prohibits stopping.
  • !Learners think it is not parking if the driver remains in the vehicle. Waiting is normally considered parking.
  • !Learners think that any exit ends the prohibition. The prohibition normally ends only at a road junction or at one of the signs that ends or replaces the regulation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop to drop off a passenger?

Yes, you may normally stop for the shortest possible time to drop off or pick up a passenger. You cannot remain there waiting for the passenger.

No, the sign applies only on the side of the road where it is installed. The other side may nevertheless be regulated by its own signs or other parking rules.

When does the prohibition end?

It applies until the nearest road junction or until a new sign 372, 370, 376, 378 or 552. A supplementary sign may specify a different or more precise extent.
