Prohibited for riders (306.9)

Prohibited for riders

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 306.9

The sign indicates that it is prohibited for riders.

When you see the sign

If you are driving a car, you may pass the sign unless other signs or rules prohibit it. However, be aware of riders who may turn around or choose another route at the sign, and pass them calmly while keeping a safe distance.

Rules

  • Anyone riding a horse or another ridden animal may not continue past the sign in the regulated direction.
  • The sign itself does not prohibit travel by passenger car, motorcycle, bicycle or small electric motor vehicle.
  • The prohibition applies to riders, and is therefore not the same as a prohibition against all vehicles.
  • Supplementary signs may indicate, among other things, which stretch of road the prohibition applies to, or make exceptions for specific road-user groups.
  • A horse-drawn vehicle is not covered by the prohibition simply because it is pulled by a horse; the sign applies to people riding.

Tips

  • Look for the black rider on the horse inside the red circle; the symbol shows exactly who the prohibition applies to.
  • Do not stop the car just because of this sign if you are otherwise allowed to continue driving.
  • Read any supplementary signs before deciding who the prohibition applies to and how far it extends.
  • If a rider is near the sign, slow down and avoid sudden engine noise or passing too closely, as this could frighten the horse.

Common misconceptions

  • !Believing that the sign prohibits all vehicles because it has a red border and white background.
  • !Confusing the sign with no entry and believing that no road users may pass from this side.
  • !Believing that the prohibition applies to all forms of travel involving horses, including horse-drawn vehicles, even though the symbol and prohibition apply to riders.
