Prohibited for pedestrians
The sign indicates that it is prohibited for pedestrians.
When you see the sign
The sign prohibits pedestrians from continuing past it, but does not in itself prohibit driving a car. Check whether other signs or supplementary panels also restrict motor traffic. Nevertheless, drive attentively, as pedestrians may still be present in the area.
Rules
- Pedestrians are not permitted to pass the sign in the direction to which it applies.
- The prohibition also applies to people who are legally considered pedestrians, including anyone walking a bicycle or moped.
- The sign does not prohibit motor vehicles, bicycles or small electric motor vehicles unless this is indicated by other signs.
- A supplementary panel may specify where, when or in which direction the prohibition applies.
Tips
- Do not stop the car somewhere that would require passengers to walk past the sign.
- Look for other prohibition signs alongside it, especially signs prohibiting vehicles or cycling.
- Be especially alert near tunnels and on other stretches where pedestrians may be difficult to spot.
- If you park and continue on foot, you must comply with the prohibition as a pedestrian.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think the sign closes the road to all traffic, but it applies only to pedestrians and people who are legally considered pedestrians.
- Some people think the sign also automatically prohibits cycling or using a small electric motor vehicle.
- Some overlook the fact that a person walking a bicycle is considered a pedestrian and is therefore covered by the prohibition.

Theory test tip
Look closely at the road-user symbol: A pedestrian symbol means that only pedestrians are prohibited. Do not choose “prohibited for all vehicles” or “prohibited for cyclists” simply because the sign has a red border.
Did you know
The sign is often used near tunnels, bridges and other stretches of road where travelling on foot is particularly dangerous or impractical. It may be installed even when car and bicycle traffic is still permitted.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a car past the sign?
Yes, the sign alone does not prohibit driving. However, you must comply with any other signs, supplementary panels and traffic rules at the location.
Can I cycle past the sign?
The sign does not in itself prohibit cycling. However, if you dismount and walk your bicycle, you are considered a pedestrian and are covered by the prohibition.
Does the sign apply to people using wheelchairs?
A person operating a wheelchair or another means of transport intended for pedestrians is normally considered a pedestrian. The prohibition therefore applies to them.
What should I do if a pedestrian is nevertheless beyond the sign?
Slow down and keep a safe distance. The sign does not exempt you from your duty to act considerately and avoid causing danger.
