No overtaking
The prohibition applies to overtaking a motor vehicle having more than two wheels. The prohibition does not apply to overtaking which may legally take place on the right under trafikkreglene. The prohibition applies up to sign 336 “End of no overtaking”, or over a distance specified by a supplementary sign.
When you see the sign
You must not overtake motor vehicles with more than two wheels. Keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front and wait to overtake until the prohibition has ended or you are outside the section indicated on the supplementary plate.
Rules
- The prohibition applies to overtaking motor vehicles with more than two wheels, such as passenger cars, vans, lorries and tractors.
- The sign does not in itself prohibit overtaking a two-wheeled motorcycle or moped, but the overtaking must otherwise be legal and carried out safely.
- The prohibition does not apply to overtaking that may legally take place on the right under the traffic regulations.
- The prohibition applies up to sign 336 «Slutt på forbikjøringsforbud», or throughout the section indicated by the supplementary plate.
Tips
- Look for a supplementary plate indicating the length of the section where the prohibition applies.
- Do not start overtaking as you approach the sign if you cannot complete the manoeuvre safely and legally before reaching it.
- Keep a good distance from the vehicle in front so that you maintain visibility and avoid driving too close while waiting.
- Look for sign 336 before considering overtaking on the left again, and at the same time check visibility, road markings and other traffic conditions.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign prohibits all further traffic, but it only prohibits specific overtaking manoeuvres.
- Some people think that no vehicles may be passed, even though the wording applies to motor vehicles with more than two wheels.
- Some people assume that the prohibition automatically ends at the next junction, but it applies up to the end sign or throughout the section indicated by the supplementary plate.

Theory test tip
A common trap is to interpret the sign as prohibiting entry or as prohibiting all overtaking. Remember the wording: It applies to overtaking a motor vehicle with more than two wheels, while overtaking legally on the right is exempt.
Did you know
What matters is the number of wheels on the motor vehicle you want to overtake, not whether it is large or small. A typical passenger car is therefore covered by the prohibition, while a two-wheeled motorcycle is not covered by this particular sign.
Frequently asked questions
Can I overtake a passenger car after this sign?
No, a passenger car is a motor vehicle with more than two wheels and is covered by the prohibition. You must wait until the prohibition has ended, unless passing on the right is legally permitted.
Can I overtake a two-wheeled motorcycle?
The sign does not in itself prohibit overtaking a motor vehicle with only two wheels. However, the overtaking must still be legal and carried out safely in accordance with the traffic regulations, road markings, visibility and other conditions.
When does the prohibition end?
It applies up to sign 336 «Slutt på forbikjøringsforbud». If a supplementary plate indicates a specific section, the prohibition applies throughout that section.
Is it always illegal to pass a vehicle on the right here?
No, the sign does not apply to overtaking that may legally take place on the right under the traffic regulations. Passing on the right is nevertheless permitted only in situations where the traffic regulations allow it.
