No overtaking for lorries
The prohibition applies to a lorry with a permitted gross weight exceeding 3.500 kg overtaking a motor vehicle having more than two wheels. The prohibition does not apply to overtaking which may legally take place on the right under trafikkreglene. The prohibition applies up to sign 337 “End of no overtaking for lorries”, or over a distance specified by a supplementary sign.
When you see the sign
If you are driving a truck with a permissible gross weight over 3 500 kg, you must not overtake a motor vehicle with more than two wheels. If you are driving a passenger car or a vehicle not covered by the prohibition, the usual overtaking rules apply.
Rules
- The prohibition applies to trucks with a permissible gross weight over 3 500 kg.
- Such a truck may not overtake a motor vehicle with more than two wheels.
- The prohibition does not apply to overtaking that is legally permitted on the right under the traffic rules.
- The prohibition continues up to sign 337 «Slutt på forbikjøringsforbud for lastebil», or throughout the stretch indicated on an supplementary plate.
Tips
- Check the vehicle’s permissible gross weight in the vehicle registration certificate; the actual weight during the trip is not what determines whether the prohibition applies.
- Do not confuse the sign with a ban on driving trucks on the road. The truck may continue, but overtaking is restricted.
- Look for supplementary plates indicating how long the prohibition applies, and for sign 337, which ends it.
- Remember that the sign applies to the person driving the truck, not to the vehicle being overtaken.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that all trucks are banned from the road. The sign prohibits a specific type of overtaking, not continuing to drive.
- Thinking that the 3 500 kg limit refers to the truck’s actual weight. The permissible gross weight is what matters.
- Thinking that the prohibition applies to all motor vehicles. Passenger cars and other vehicles that are not trucks over the weight limit are not covered by the prohibition indicated by the sign itself.

Theory test tip
A common trap is to confuse this with sign 306.5, which prohibits trucks and tractor units from entering. Here, only overtaking by a truck with a permissible gross weight over 3 500 kg is restricted.
Did you know
The sign is used especially on stretches of road where overtaking between heavy vehicles can create long queues or large differences in speed, for example on uphill sections and busy main roads.
Frequently asked questions
Does the prohibition apply when the truck weighs less than 3 500 kg on the particular trip?
Yes, if the truck’s permissible gross weight is over 3 500 kg. How much it actually weighs or is carrying on the trip does not change the effect of the sign.
Can a passenger car overtake on this stretch of road?
The sign does not prohibit passenger cars from overtaking. However, the driver must still follow the usual rules concerning visibility, road markings and safe overtaking.
Can a truck over 3 500 kg overtake a two-wheeled motorcycle?
The prohibition indicated by the sign applies to overtaking a motor vehicle with more than two wheels. A two-wheeled motorcycle is therefore not covered by this particular prohibition, but the overtaking must still be legal and carried out safely.
When does the prohibition end?
It continues up to sign 337 «Slutt på forbikjøringsforbud for lastebil». If a supplementary plate indicates a specific stretch, the prohibition applies throughout that stretch.
