Speed limit (362.100)

Speed limit

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 362.100

The prohibition applies to driving at a speed higher than the number of km/h indicated. The prohibition applies on the road section concerned until another speed limit is indicated by a) a new sign 362 “Speed limit” or b) sign 366 “Speed limit zone”, or until one of the following signs is installed: c) sign 364 “End of special speed limit” d) sign 540 “Gatetun” e) sign 548 “Gågate”. When the sign is used for temporary regulation, it may have a yellow background.

When you see the sign

You must have reduced your speed to no more than 100 km/h when passing the sign. Drive more slowly if visibility, road conditions, traffic or other circumstances make 100 km/h unsafe.

Rules

  • The sign prohibits driving faster than 100 km/h on the road section concerned.
  • The speed limit applies from the location where the sign is posted, so any braking must take place before passing the sign.
  • The limit applies until another speed limit is indicated by sign 362 «Fartsgrense» or sign 366 «Fartsgrensesone».
  • The limit also ends at sign 364 «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
  • 100 km/h is an upper limit, not a speed you are always entitled or required to maintain.

Tips

  • Look well ahead and reduce your speed gradually so that your speedometer shows no more than 100 km/h when you pass the sign.
  • Use cruise control only when traffic, weather and road conditions make it safe, and make sure your speed does not increase when driving downhill.
  • Watch for new speed-limit signs at junctions, tunnels and roadworks; the 100 km/h limit does not necessarily apply for the entire journey.
  • Do not automatically increase your speed to 100 km/h if you are driving more slowly; consider factors such as visibility, road grip and the distance to the vehicle ahead.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people think the sign means they should maintain exactly 100 km/h. The number indicates the maximum permitted speed, and conditions may require a significantly lower speed.
  • !Some assume that the sign automatically means a motorway. A 100 km/h speed limit only indicates the speed limit; a motorway is shown by a separate sign.
  • !Some people think the speed limit always ends at the next junction. Skiltforskriften specifies particular signs that change or end this speed limit.

Easy

Speed limit (362.100)

What does the sign mean?

  • AThe mandatory speed is 100 km/t.
  • BThe recommended speed is 100 km/t.
  • CThe highest permitted speed is 100 km/t.
  • DAll entry is prohibited.

Medium

You are approaching the sign at 110 km/t. What should you do?

  • AYou maintain exactly 100 km/t regardless of the road conditions.
  • BYou reduce your speed to a maximum of 100 km/t after the sign.
  • CYou continue at 110 km/t until the next junction.
  • DYou reduce your speed to a maximum of 100 km/t before the sign.

Hard

You pass the sign on a road that is not marked as motorveg. What can you conclude with certainty?

  • AThe road is a motorveg with a permitted speed of 100 km/t.
  • BThe road has a highest permitted speed of 100 km/t.
  • CThe road has a recommended speed of exactly 100 km/t.
  • DThe road has a general speed limit of only 80 km/t.

Theory test tip

A common theory-test trap is to interpret 100 as a recommended speed or as a motorway sign. Choose the answer stating that 100 km/h is the maximum permitted speed from the sign, while also recognising that you must drive more slowly when conditions require it.

Did you know

100 km/h is not Norway's highest signed speed limit; some road sections have a limit of 110 km/h. However, a motorway without a separate speed-limit sign does not automatically have a limit of 110 km/h; it follows the general limit of 80 km/h outside built-up areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive at 100 km/h even if it is raining heavily or the road is slippery?

Only if it is safe to do so, which it often will not be in such conditions. Vegtrafikkloven requires you to adapt your speed to factors including the road conditions, visibility, road and traffic.

When does the 100 km/h speed limit start to apply?

It applies from the location where the sign is installed. Therefore, if you are coming from a section with a higher limit, you must have reduced your speed to no more than 100 km/h before passing the sign.

Does the sign mean that the road is a motorway?

No. Sign 362.100 only indicates the maximum permitted speed, while motorway status is indicated by a separate information sign.

Does the 100 km/h limit continue after I have passed a normal junction?

Yes, it does not automatically end simply because you pass a junction. It applies until it is changed or ended by one of the signs specified in Skiltforskriften.
