Speed limit
The prohibition applies to driving at a speed higher than the number of km/h indicated. The prohibition applies on the road section concerned until another speed limit is indicated by a) a new sign 362 “Speed limit” or b) sign 366 “Speed limit zone”, or until one of the following signs is installed: c) sign 364 “End of special speed limit” d) sign 540 “Gatetun” e) sign 548 “Gågate”. When the sign is used for temporary regulation, it may have a yellow background.
When you see the sign
From the sign onward, the maximum permitted speed is 90 km/h. If the speed limit is lowered to 90 km/h, you must have reduced your speed by the time you reach the sign; if it is raised to 90 km/h, you may only increase your speed after passing the sign.
Rules
- You must not drive faster than 90 km/h after the sign, including when overtaking.
- The speed limit applies until a new sign 362 «Speed limit» or sign 366 «Speed limit zone» indicates a different limit.
- The limit also ends at sign 364 «End of special speed limit», sign 540 «Traffic-calmed street» or sign 548 «Pedestrian street».
- An intersection does not cancel the 90 km/h speed limit.
- 90 km/h is a maximum limit, not a mandatory speed. You must reduce your speed when road conditions, visibility, traffic or other circumstances require it.
Tips
- Check your speedometer at the sign, especially if you are coming from a road with a speed limit of 100 or 110 km/h.
- Do not start accelerating until you have passed the sign if the previous speed limit was lower.
- Be aware that braking distance increases significantly at 90 km/h, and keep a good distance from the vehicle in front.
- Look out for new speed-limit signs, but do not assume that the limit ends simply because you pass an intersection.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that 90 km/h is the recommended speed. The sign shows the maximum permitted speed, and you may need to drive considerably slower.
- Some people think they can exceed 90 km/h to complete an overtaking manoeuvre more quickly. The speed limit also applies when overtaking.
- Some people think that an intersection automatically ends the speed limit. It does not.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt indicates that the highest permitted speed is 90 km/t.
- BIt indicates that all driving with motor vehicles is prohibited.
- CIt indicates that driving with a lorry and tractor unit is prohibited.
- DIt recommends that you maintain a speed of 90 km/t.
Medium
You have passed this sign, but encounter dense fog and a wet carriageway. What do you do?
- AI maintain exactly 90 km/t because the sign requires this speed.
- BI maintain 90 km/t as long as the car has good winter tyres.
- CI increase my speed above 90 km/t to get through the fog more quickly.
- DI reduce my speed to what is safe considering the conditions.
Hard
You have passed this sign and want to overtake a car travelling at 88 km/t. What is the highest permitted speed during the overtaking manoeuvre?
- AYou may drive at no more than 100 km/t during the overtaking manoeuvre.
- BYou may drive at no more than 80 km/t during the overtaking manoeuvre.
- CYou may drive at no more than 110 km/t during the overtaking manoeuvre.
- DYou may drive at no more than 90 km/t during the overtaking manoeuvre.
Theory test tip
A common trap is to answer that the 90 km/h limit ends at the next intersection. In the theory test, look for a new speed-limit sign, the sign «End of special speed limit», a traffic-calmed street or a pedestrian street before considering the limit to have ended.
Did you know
The general speed limit outside built-up areas is 80 km/h. A limit of 90 km/h must therefore be specifically indicated by a sign, and is used on road sections where road and traffic safety conditions permit higher speeds.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive at 95 km/h while overtaking?
No. You may not exceed 90 km/h even if this is necessary to pass more quickly; in that case, you must wait before overtaking.
Does the 90 km/h limit apply all the way to the next intersection?
The speed limit does not automatically end at an intersection. It continues until it is changed or ended by a relevant sign.
Do I always have to drive at exactly 90 km/h?
No. 90 km/h is the maximum permitted speed, and you must drive more slowly if visibility, road conditions, traffic, road standards or other circumstances make this necessary.
What applies after the sign «End of special speed limit»?
The general speed limit for the area applies, unless another speed limit is indicated by a sign. This is normally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside built-up areas.
