Speed limit (362.7)

Speed limit

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 362.7

The prohibition applies to driving at a speed higher than the number of km/h indicated. The prohibition applies on the road section concerned until another speed limit is indicated by a) a new sign 362 “Speed limit” or b) sign 366 “Speed limit zone”, or until one of the following signs is installed: c) sign 364 “End of special speed limit” d) sign 540 “Gatetun” e) sign 548 “Gågate”. When the sign is used for temporary regulation, it may have a yellow background.

When you see the sign

From the sign onwards, you must not drive faster than 70 km/h. Reduce your speed before passing the sign if you are driving faster, and choose a lower speed when road, visibility or traffic conditions require it.

Rules

  • The sign indicates a maximum permitted speed of 70 km/h, not a speed you must always maintain.
  • The speed limit applies from the location where the sign is installed.
  • The restriction applies until another speed limit is indicated by sign 362 «Fartsgrense» or sign 366 «Fartsgrensesone».
  • The speed limit also ends at sign 364 «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
  • An intersection does not in itself cancel the posted speed limit of 70 km/h.

Tips

  • Check your speedometer early and brake smoothly so that your speed is no more than 70 km/h when you pass the sign.
  • Look for the sign on both sides of the road, especially when coming from a stretch with an 80 km/h limit.
  • Maintain a good safety margin below 70 km/h on downhill sections so that the car does not unintentionally exceed the limit.
  • Reduce your speed below 70 km/h in poor visibility, on slippery roads, on sharp bends or in heavy traffic.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that 70 km/h is the recommended speed. The number indicates the highest permitted speed under good conditions.
  • !Waiting until after passing the sign to brake. Your speed must already be reduced when you reach the sign.
  • !Thinking that the speed limit automatically ends at the next intersection or returns to 80 km/h without another relevant sign.

Speed limit (362.7)

What does this sign mean?

Medium

You are approaching this sign at 80 km/t. What should you do?

  • BContinue at 80 km/t if the road and visibility are good.
  • CStop in front of the sign before continuing at 70 km/t.

You pass this sign outside a built-up area and then drive through a junction. No new signs have been put up. What is the highest permitted speed after the junction?

  • AThe highest permitted speed is still 70 km/t.
  • BThe highest permitted speed is now 50 km/t.
  • CThe highest permitted speed is now 80 km/t.
  • DThe highest permitted speed is now determined only by the driving conditions.

Theory test tip

A common trap is to choose 80 km/h after an intersection because this is the general speed limit outside built-up areas. The 70 km/h limit indicated by the sign still applies until the speed limit is changed or cancelled by one of the signs specified in the sign regulations.

Did you know

Sign 362.7 is often used on road sections where the general speed limit outside built-up areas would otherwise be 80 km/h, but where the road layout, intersections, buildings or accident risk indicate a lower limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive at 70 km/h even if the road is slippery?

Not necessarily. You must always adapt your speed to the road surface, visibility, traffic and road conditions, so it may be necessary to drive considerably more slowly than 70 km/h.

When does the 70 km/h speed limit begin to apply?

It applies from the location where the sign is installed. If you are coming from a higher speed limit, you must have reduced your speed to no more than 70 km/h before passing the sign.

Does the 70 km/h limit end at an intersection?

No, an intersection does not automatically cancel the speed limit. It continues until it is changed or ended by a relevant sign.

What does the sign «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense» mean after a 70 km/h zone?

It ends the specifically posted 70 km/h limit. The general speed limit for the area then applies, normally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside built-up areas, unless otherwise indicated by signs.
