Speed limit
The prohibition applies to driving at a speed higher than the number of km/h indicated. The prohibition applies on the road section concerned until another speed limit is indicated by a) a new sign 362 “Speed limit” or b) sign 366 “Speed limit zone”, or until one of the following signs is installed: c) sign 364 “End of special speed limit” d) sign 540 “Gatetun” e) sign 548 “Gågate”. When the sign is used for temporary regulation, it may have a yellow background.
When you see the sign
You must have reduced your speed to a maximum of 60 km/h when you pass the sign. Drive more slowly if visibility, road conditions, traffic or other circumstances make 60 km/h unsafe.
Rules
- The sign prohibits driving at more than 60 km/h on the road section in question.
- The speed limit applies from the location of the sign, so you must slow down before passing it.
- The restriction applies until another speed limit is indicated by sign 362 «Fartsgrense» or sign 366 «Fartsgrensesone».
- The speed limit also ends at sign 364 «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
- 60 km/h is the highest permitted speed, not a speed you are always entitled or required to maintain.
Tips
- Release the accelerator early and brake smoothly so that the speedometer shows no more than 60 km/h when you pass the sign.
- Monitor your speed on downhill sections, where the car can easily exceed 60 km/h without additional acceleration.
- Look out for new speed-limit signs and signs that end the special speed limit; do not assume that an intersection alone cancels the 60 km/h limit.
- Choose a speed below 60 km/h in poor visibility, on slippery roads, in heavy traffic or where there is a risk of pedestrians and cyclists.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think they can start braking after passing the sign, but your speed must be reduced to 60 km/h at the sign.
- Some interpret 60 km/h as a recommended speed. The number indicates the maximum permitted speed under good conditions.
- Some people think the speed limit automatically ends at the next intersection. Sign 362.6 continues to apply until it is changed or ended by one of the signs specified in the traffic sign regulations.

Easy
What does the sign in the picture mean?
- AMotor vehicles are prohibited from continuing.
- BIt is recommended to drive at approximately 60 km/t.
- CAll vehicles are prohibited from continuing.
- DIt is prohibited to drive faster than 60 km/t.
Medium
You are driving at 75 km/t and are approaching the sign in the picture. What should you do?
- AReduce your speed to no more than 60 km/t before passing the sign.
- BReduce your speed to no more than 60 km/t after passing the sign.
- CContinue at 75 km/t if the road is dry and visibility is good.
- DContinue at 75 km/t until you reach the next junction.
Hard
You are driving outside a built-up area, where the speed limit has so far been 80 km/t. What is the highest permitted speed under good conditions immediately after passing the sign in the picture?
- AThe highest permitted speed is 110 km/t.
- BThe highest permitted speed is 80 km/t.
- CThe highest permitted speed is 60 km/t.
- DThe highest permitted speed is 70 km/t.
Theory test tip
A common trap is a question where you pass an intersection without seeing a new speed-limit sign. In that case, 60 km/h still applies; the intersection alone does not end the posted speed limit.
Did you know
A posted limit of 60 km/h is a special speed limit and replaces the general limit that would otherwise apply at that location. It is often used on road sections where 50 km/h is considered unnecessarily low, while 80 km/h would be too high.
Frequently asked questions
When must the car be down to 60 km/h?
The car must be travelling at no more than 60 km/h when you pass the sign. You must therefore start reducing your speed well before the sign.
Can I drive at 60 km/h even if the road is slippery?
Only if it is safe to do so. You must always adapt your speed to factors including road conditions, visibility and traffic, and on a slippery road the appropriate speed may be considerably lower than 60 km/h.
Does the 60 km/h limit end at an intersection?
No, not merely because you pass an intersection. The limit applies until it is changed or ended by a relevant sign, such as a new speed limit or «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense».
What applies after the sign «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense»?
The general speed limit for the area applies unless another speed limit is posted. It is normally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside built-up areas.
