Speed limit
The prohibition applies to driving at a speed higher than the number of km/h indicated. The prohibition applies on the road section concerned until another speed limit is indicated by a) a new sign 362 “Speed limit” or b) sign 366 “Speed limit zone”, or until one of the following signs is installed: c) sign 364 “End of special speed limit” d) sign 540 “Gatetun” e) sign 548 “Gågate”. When the sign is used for temporary regulation, it may have a yellow background.
When you see the sign
By the time you reach the sign, you must have reduced your speed to no more than 50 km/h. Continue at 50 km/h or below, and reduce your speed further if the weather, visibility, road conditions or traffic conditions require it.
Rules
- The sign prohibits driving at speeds above 50 km/h from the point where the sign is located.
- The speed limit applies until a new sign 362 «Fartsgrense» or sign 366 «Fartsgrensesone» indicates a different limit.
- The speed limit also ends at sign 364 «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
- A normal road junction does not cancel the posted speed limit.
- 50 km/h is the maximum permitted speed, not a speed you are always entitled to maintain.
Tips
- Release the accelerator early and brake smoothly so that your speedometer shows no more than 50 km/h when you pass the sign.
- Monitor your speed on downhill stretches, as the car can easily accelerate above 50 km/h.
- Look out for new speed-limit or zone signs, but do not assume that the limit ends at the next junction.
- Keep a good margin below 50 km/h if visibility, road conditions or the traffic situation are challenging.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think they can start braking after the sign, but your speed must be reduced to no more than 50 km/h when you pass it.
- Some people think that a road junction automatically cancels the speed limit. The sign remains in force until the limit is changed or ended by a relevant sign.
- Some people interpret 50 km/h as a recommended speed. The number indicates the maximum permitted speed, and the conditions may require a considerably lower speed.

Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt is prohibited to drive faster than 50 km/t.
- BIt is recommended to maintain approximately 50 km/t.
- CAll vehicles are prohibited from continuing.
- DMotor vehicles are prohibited from continuing.
Medium
You are approaching the sign at 70 km/t. What should you do?
- AYou begin reducing your speed to 50 km/t after passing the sign.
- BYou continue at 70 km/t until the first junction after the sign.
- CYou reduce your speed to a maximum of 50 km/t before passing the sign.
- DYou continue at 70 km/t if the road, visibility and traffic conditions are good.
Hard
You pass the sign outside a built-up area, where the general speed limit would otherwise be 80 km/t. What highest permitted speed applies immediately after the sign?
- AThe highest permitted speed is 60 km/t.
- BThe highest permitted speed is 80 km/t.
- CThe highest permitted speed is 50 km/t.
- DThe highest permitted speed is 70 km/t.
Theory test tip
A typical trap is to answer that the 50 km/h limit ends at the first junction. In the theory test, you should look for a new speed-limit sign, speed-limit zone, end of a special speed limit, residential street or pedestrian street.
Did you know
50 km/h is also the general speed limit in built-up areas when no other speed limit has been set. However, sign 362.5 expressly indicates that the maximum permitted speed on the road section in question is 50 km/h.
Frequently asked questions
When must the car be down to 50 km/h?
The car must be travelling at no more than 50 km/h when you pass the sign. You must therefore start reducing your speed before the sign.
Does the 50 km/h limit still apply after a road junction?
Yes, a normal road junction does not cancel the sign. The limit continues to apply until it is changed or ended by a sign with that effect.
Can I always drive at 50 km/h when this sign is present?
No, 50 km/h is only the maximum permitted speed. You must drive more slowly if, among other things, visibility, road conditions, the condition of the road or traffic make 50 km/h unsafe.
What applies after the sign «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense»?
The specially posted 50 km/h limit ends, and the general speed limit applies unless another limit is posted. The general limit is normally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside built-up areas.
