Speed limit (362.3)

Speed limit

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 362.3

The prohibition applies to driving at a speed higher than the number of km/h indicated. The prohibition applies on the road section concerned until another speed limit is indicated by a) a new sign 362 “Speed limit” or b) sign 366 “Speed limit zone”, or until one of the following signs is installed: c) sign 364 “End of special speed limit” d) sign 540 “Gatetun” e) sign 548 “Gågate”. When the sign is used for temporary regulation, it may have a yellow background.

When you see the sign

By the time you reach the sign, you must have reduced your speed to no more than 30 km/t. Continue at 30 km/t or below, and drive more slowly if visibility, road or traffic conditions require it.

Rules

  • The sign prohibits driving at speeds above 30 km/t from the point where the sign is located.
  • The speed limit applies on the relevant section of road until another speed limit is indicated by sign 362 «Fartsgrense» or sign 366 «Fartsgrensesone».
  • The speed limit also ends at sign 364 «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
  • 30 km/t is the highest permitted speed, not a speed you are always entitled or required to maintain.

Tips

  • Start slowing down in good time so that your speed is no more than 30 km/t when you pass the sign.
  • Pay extra attention to children, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles emerging from driveways, since the sign is often used in residential areas and near schools.
  • Check your speedometer regularly; in 30 zones, your speed can easily increase without feeling fast.
  • Look out for new speed limit signs or end signs, and do not assume that the 30 limit ends simply because the road becomes wider or the surroundings change.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that the sign recommends 30 km/t. It indicates a binding maximum permitted speed.
  • !Waiting until after passing the sign to brake. Your speed must be reduced by the time you reach the sign.
  • !Assuming that the 30 limit automatically ends at the next junction. You must follow the signs that end or replace the speed limit.

Theory test tip

A common trap is to choose the general speed limit of 50 km/t in built-up areas after a junction. When 30 km/t is specifically signposted, you must follow it until the signs indicate a new speed limit or that the special speed limit has ended.

Did you know

30 km/t is used particularly where there is a high risk of conflict with vulnerable road users, including near schools, in residential areas and in town centres. The low speed gives drivers more time to detect and react to people entering the road.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive at 30 km/t if conditions are poor?

Not necessarily. You must reduce your speed further if the weather, road conditions, visibility or traffic conditions make 30 km/t unsafe.

When must the car be down to 30 km/t?

The car must be travelling at no more than 30 km/t as you pass the sign. You must therefore start slowing down before the sign.

Does a junction cancel the 30 limit?

You must not assume that a junction on its own cancels the signed speed limit. Look for a new speed limit sign or a sign that explicitly ends or replaces the limit.

What is the difference between «Fartsgrense 30» and «Fartsgrensesone 30»?

Sign 362.3 indicates 30 km/t on the relevant section of road. A zone sign indicates that 30 km/t applies on the roads within a defined area until the end of the zone is signposted.
