Road works (110)

Road works

Warning Signs Sign number: 110

The sign warns of road works.

When you see the sign

Slow down and be prepared for workers, construction machinery, lane narrowing, an uneven road surface or queues. Follow temporary signs, traffic lights and instructions from the traffic marshal, and drive so that you can stop if the situation requires it.

Rules

  • The sign warns of roadworks on or alongside the road, but does not by itself introduce a specific speed limit.
  • A temporary speed limit posted at the work area is mandatory and applies until it is cancelled or replaced by another speed limit.
  • You must follow the instructions from the traffic marshal and any temporary traffic signals at the work site.
  • You must adjust your speed so that you remain in control and can stop for workers, machinery, queues or other obstacles.

Tips

  • Release the accelerator early and avoid heavy braking immediately before the work area.
  • Keep a greater distance from the vehicle in front because traffic may stop suddenly.
  • Look out for temporary lanes, narrowing and changes to the traffic pattern.
  • Pass workers and construction machinery at a low speed and with plenty of lateral clearance.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the sign automatically means a specific speed limit, such as 50 km/h.
  • !Confusing the sign with a warning of a narrower road or a steep hill.
  • !Following the usual road alignment or route without looking for temporary traffic regulation through the work area.

Road works (110)

What does this sign warn about?

  • ADangerous bends in the road
  • BA steep hill on the road
  • CA narrower carriageway on the road

Medium

A traffic controller at the work site signals you to stop, even though the lane ahead appears to be open. What should you do?

  • CStop and wait until the traffic controller gives the all-clear.
  • DContinue carefully because the lane ahead appears to be open.

Hard

You pass this sign outside a built-up area. The speed limit before the sign is 80 km/h, and no new speed-limit sign has been put up. What applies?

  • AThe speed limit is cancelled at the sign, so the driver chooses the speed.
  • BThe speed limit automatically becomes 30 km/h because work is taking place beside the road.
  • CThe speed limit is still 80 km/h, but the speed must be adapted to the conditions.
  • DThe speed limit automatically becomes 50 km/h, even though there is no separate speed-limit sign.

Theory test tip

A common trap is to answer that the sign requires you to reduce your speed. It warns of a hazard, while any specific speed limit must be shown by a separate speed-limit sign.

Did you know

The sign is used both for short-term maintenance and for larger construction projects. It is often combined with supplementary signs showing the distance to the work area or how far it extends.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to slow down when I see this sign?

You must adjust your speed to the conditions and the hazard being warned about. Even though the sign does not set a specific speed, it will often be necessary to reduce your speed.

Whose instructions should I follow if a traffic marshal is giving signals?

You must follow the traffic marshal's instructions at the work site. Stay alert and stop or proceed as directed by the marshal.

Does the sign mean that the road will become narrower?

Not necessarily, but the roadworks may lead to narrowing or changes to the lanes. Specific narrowing may also be warned of with the sign «Smalere veg».

How long does the warning apply?

The sign applies to the hazard associated with the roadworks ahead. A supplementary sign may indicate the distance to the work site or how far the warned section extends.
