Dangerous bend (100.2)

Dangerous bend

Warning Signs Sign number: 100.2

The sign warns of a dangerous bend to the left.

When you see the sign

Be prepared for a dangerous bend to the left, and adjust your speed before entering the bend. Position the vehicle correctly within your lane, and choose a speed that allows you to stop within the section of road you can see.

Rules

  • Sign 100.2 warns of one dangerous bend, with the bend going to the left.
  • Your speed must be adapted to, among other things, the course of the road, visibility, road and weather conditions, and traffic conditions, even if the posted speed limit does not change.
  • You must be able to stop within the section of road you can see, and in front of any foreseeable obstacle.
  • The sign does not in itself prohibit overtaking, but overtaking is not permitted if visibility is insufficient or the manoeuvre cannot be carried out safely.
  • An supplementary plate may indicate the distance to the bend or provide other additional information.

Tips

  • Brake before the bend to avoid heavy braking while the vehicle is turning.
  • Look well through the bend and direct your gaze towards the area where you intend to drive.
  • Stay well within your lane, especially because oncoming vehicles may come close to the centre line.
  • Be especially careful on wet roads, ice, gravel or in poor visibility, as these conditions can significantly reduce lateral grip.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people confuse the sign with 100.1, but 100.2 shows that the dangerous bend goes to the left, not to the right.
  • !Some people think the sign warns of several bends. Several dangerous bends are indicated by sign 102.1 or 102.2.
  • !Some assume that the sign automatically lowers the speed limit. It does not, but the driver must still reduce speed when conditions require it.

Frequently asked questions

Does sign 100.2 mean that I have to turn left at an intersection?

No. The sign warns that the road ahead has a dangerous curve to the left, not that you should turn left at an intersection.

Do I always have to brake when I see the sign?

You must adjust your speed so that you can drive safely through the bend. If your speed is already sufficiently low for the visibility, road and weather conditions, and course of the road, it is not necessarily necessary to brake further.

Is it prohibited to overtake after the sign?

The sign does not automatically impose an overtaking prohibition. However, you must refrain from overtaking if the bend provides insufficient visibility or the overtaking cannot otherwise be carried out safely.

What is the difference between sign 100.2 and 102.2?

Sign 100.2 warns of one dangerous bend to the left. Sign 102.2 warns of several dangerous bends in succession, with the first one going to the left.
