Road narrows
The sign warns that the road narrows from the right side.
When you see the sign
Reduce your speed if necessary, and be prepared for the road to become narrower on the right side in your direction of travel. Check for oncoming traffic, cyclists and the edge of the road, and position the car so that you pass the narrowing with sufficient clearance.
Rules
- Sign 106.2 warns that the road becomes narrower on the right side in your direction of travel.
- Your speed must be adapted to the reduced road width, visibility and the possibility of oncoming traffic.
- The sign does not in itself give you priority through the narrow section; any give-way obligation is indicated by separate signs.
- Keep as far to the right as possible, but do not get too close to the edge of the road, barriers, cyclists or other obstacles.
- When meeting oncoming traffic, keep a sufficient distance from oncoming vehicles and, if necessary, reduce your speed or stop.
Tips
- Look for where the right edge of the road begins to move inwards, and position yourself early rather than swerving sharply to the left.
- Reduce your speed before the narrowing if visibility is poor or there is oncoming traffic.
- Check your right-hand mirror and blind spot if cyclists or moped riders may be travelling along the edge of the road.
- Look for supplementary plates or other signs indicating a distance, length of road or who has the give-way obligation.
Common misconceptions
- Learners confuse this sign with 106.3. On 106.2, the right edge moves inwards, while the left edge is straight.
- Some people think the sign means that the driver automatically has to give way to oncoming traffic. It only warns of the narrowing and does not establish priority.
- Some interpret the sloping line as indicating a dangerous bend, even though the sign shows that the road width changes.

Theory test tip
Look at which of the black edge lines slopes inwards. When the right-hand line slopes in and the left-hand line is straight, the correct answer is that the road becomes narrower on the right side, not that the road bends to the left.
Did you know
The three variants of «Smalere veg» are distinguished by the lines in the symbol: 106.1 shows a narrowing from both sides, while 106.2 and 106.3 show a narrowing from the right and left side, respectively, in the direction of travel.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to give way to oncoming traffic when I see sign 106.2?
Not automatically. The sign is a warning sign and only warns that the road becomes narrower on the right; any give-way obligation must follow from the situation or be indicated by separate signs.
Does the sign mean that my lane is disappearing?
No, not necessarily. It means that the road becomes narrower on the right side, but lane changes or merging must be assessed based on road markings and other signs.
How do I distinguish 106.2 from 106.3?
On 106.2, the right edge line slopes inwards because the narrowing comes from the right. On 106.3, the left edge line slopes inwards.
Do I always have to brake when I see the sign?
You must adapt your speed to the road width, visibility and traffic. If the narrowing can be passed safely at your current speed, there is no specific requirement to reduce your speed by a particular amount.
