Tram
The sign warns of a tram.
When you see the sign
Reduce your speed if necessary, and look out for trams, tracks and signals in or across the carriageway. Be prepared to stop, and avoid stopping on the tracks.
Rules
- The sign warns of tram traffic, but does not in itself set a specific speed limit.
- You must give way to trams and stop if necessary, unless traffic lights, signs or police instructions regulate the situation differently.
- You must not drive onto the tracks if a queue or other obstruction means you could end up stopping and blocking the tram.
- When passing a tram on the right at a tram stop, you must stop and give way to passengers getting on or off when there is no traffic island protecting them.
Tips
- Look in both directions along the tracks, even when motor traffic has priority at the junction.
- Cross the tracks with calm, smooth steering, as wet or icy rails can provide less grip.
- Position your vehicle so that you do not encroach on the space the tram needs when turning.
- Make sure there is enough space on the other side before driving over the tracks.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign warns of a railway crossing. It shows a tram and is used where there is tram traffic, while railway crossings are signposted with separate signs.
- Some people think the sign alone requires a complete stop. It is a warning sign, but you must stop if necessary to give way to the tram or its passengers.
- Some people assume that trams always have unconditional priority. Traffic lights, give-way signs and police instructions may regulate the situation differently.

Easy
What does this sign warn about?
- AIt warns of a railway crossing.
- BIt warns of tram traffic.
- CIt warns of a dangerous bend.
- DIt warns that the road becomes narrower.
Medium
You are approaching rails in the carriageway. The queue on the other side is stationary, and you risk being left standing on the rails. What do you do?
- AI drive across the rails because cars in a queue have priority.
- BI drive onto the rails and follow the queue as far as it goes.
- CI wait before the rails until there is space on the other side.
- DI stop on the rails if the traffic light ahead changes to red.
Hard
You have passed the sign before an intersection. A police officer clearly signals you to drive, even though a tram is approaching from the side. What do you do?
- AI always stop and let the tram pass before driving.
- BI follow the police officer's signal and drive carefully through the intersection.
- CI wait because the warning sign takes precedence over the police officer's signal.
- DI stop and wait until the tram has left the entire intersection.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be confusing the sign with a railway crossing warning or thinking that it means you must stop. Look for the tram in the symbol, and remember that the sign warns of danger.
Did you know
The sign is particularly relevant in urban areas with trams or light rail, where the tracks often run in or cross the ordinary carriageway.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always have to stop when I see the sign?
No, the sign is a warning sign and does not automatically require a complete stop. However, you must adjust your speed and stop if necessary to give way.
Does the tram always have priority over the car?
As a general rule, other road users must give way to the tram and stop if necessary. However, traffic lights, signs or police instructions may determine otherwise in the specific situation.
Can I stop on the tracks while waiting in a queue?
No, you must not drive onto the tracks if you risk stopping and blocking them. Wait before the tracks until there is enough room for the entire vehicle on the other side.
Why should I be especially careful on the rails themselves?
Metal rails can be slippery when wet, icy or covered with leaves. Drive smoothly and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering movements when crossing them.
