Road narrows (106.3)

Road narrows

Warning Signs Sign number: 106.3

The sign warns that the road narrows from the left side.

When you see the sign

Be prepared for the left edge of the road to narrow in, making the carriageway narrower from the left side. Adjust your speed, position the car clearly within your lane and assess early whether there is enough room for oncoming traffic.

Rules

  • Sign 106.3 warns only that the road narrows from the left side; it does not mean that the road becomes narrower from both sides.
  • The sign does not itself introduce a new speed limit, but you must choose a speed that allows you to stop and pass oncoming traffic safely on the narrower section.
  • The sign does not regulate priority. Any obligation to give way at the narrowing must follow from other signs, road markings or the specific traffic situation.
  • You must keep a sufficient distance from oncoming vehicles and, if necessary, stop if passing cannot be done safely.

Tips

  • Look for where the left edge of the road begins to narrow in, and plan your position before you reach the narrowing.
  • Check for oncoming traffic early, especially if the road has no centre line or the narrowing is just after a bend.
  • Avoid overtaking just before or through the narrowing if space or visibility is limited.
  • Pay extra attention to wide vehicles, cyclists and soft road edges that may reduce the available width further.

Common misconceptions

  • !Confusing the sign with 106.2, which warns that the road narrows from the right side.
  • !Thinking that the sign automatically gives the driver priority over oncoming traffic.
  • !Interpreting the diagonal lines as a dangerous bend to the right or left, even though they show road edges that are drawing closer together.
