When you see the Zeichen
Orient yourself early on the lane alignment indicated by the guide board and keep a sufficient distance from it. Follow any clearly visible deviation or lateral passage and also observe any additional traffic signs that have been installed.
Rules
- The guide board provides visual guidance for traffic, particularly at lane deviations, bottlenecks or obstacles.
- You must remain on the side of the roadway that is visibly kept clear by its positioning and must not drive into or over the guide board.
- Zeichen 626 alone does not prescribe either a specific maximum speed or a Vorfahrt rule.
- A complete road closure cannot be inferred from a guide board alone; the entire traffic-safety arrangement and any additional traffic signs are decisive.
Tips
- Do not stare fixedly at the guide board; instead, look well ahead along the lane alignment it indicates.
- At a narrow or difficult-to-see deviation, reduce your speed so that you remain safely within the available driving space.
- Pay particular attention to lateral clearance when the guide board is positioned directly in front of an obstacle or at the edge of a construction-site traffic arrangement.
- Check whether additional signs beside the guide board prescribe a particular way of passing, a speed limit or construction-site traffic arrangements.
Common misunderstandings
- The guide board is confused with a barrier and is therefore mistakenly understood as a complete road closure.
- Learners mistake it for a direction board used on bends; however, that indicates the course of a bend, whereas the guide board directly guides traffic at a restricted point.
- The guide board is confused with a guide beacon. Guide beacons are narrow installations, usually placed repeatedly, whereas the guide board forms a broader guiding surface.
Exam tip
In exam images, pay attention to the entire traffic-safety arrangement: A guide board alone does not automatically mean that the road is completely closed. What matters is the route that its positioning, together with any additional signs and installations, visibly indicates.
Did you know
Zeichen 626 is listed in the StVO as a traffic installation, but has no separate textual description there. Its meaning is therefore derived primarily from its name, its appearance and its specific positioning on site.
Frequently asked questions
Must I always pass a guide board on the right?
No. The permitted way of passing depends on its specific positioning, the visible traffic routing and, where applicable, additional Vorschriftzeichen.
Does Zeichen 626 prescribe a specific speed?
No, the guide board does not contain a fixed speed limit. However, you must adapt your speed to the bottleneck, deviation, visibility and width of the roadway.
Is a guide board the same as a barrier?
No. A barrier typically marks a closed-off area or closure, whereas the guide board provides visual guidance for traffic along a specific route.
May I drive over a guide board if there is enough space?
No. It is a physical traffic installation and part of the traffic routing; pass it on the visibly designated route while keeping a sufficient distance from it.
