When you see the Zeichen

Identify the edge of the carriageway marked by the guide board and follow the prescribed course of the carriageway. Pass the marked area on the side indicated by the arrow beacon or hatched beacon, and maintain sufficient lateral clearance.

Rules

  • The guide board marks and clarifies the course or boundary of a traffic area.
  • An arrow beacon mounted on the guide board indicates the side on which traffic is directed past it.
  • On a hatched beacon, the diagonal stripes slope down towards the side on which you must pass.
  • The guide board must not be confused with a kerb or deliberately driven over; follow the marked traffic guidance.
  • Zeichen 629 by itself neither prescribes a specific maximum speed nor orders the carriageway to be completely closed.

Tips

  • Look at the arrow or diagonal stripes early so that you can move into the correct position in good time.
  • Reduce your speed when the traffic route is narrow and allow for the space required by your vehicle, especially in bends.
  • Keep your distance from the guide board so that neither the tyres, rims nor the side of the vehicle touch it.
  • Look out for additional traffic signs or road markings, as these alone can prescribe, for example, a speed limit or a no-overtaking restriction.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The guide board is confused with an individual guide beacon according to Zeichen 605. The characteristic feature of Zeichen 629 is the low, elongated board serving as a guiding element.
  • !Learner drivers interpret the arrow beacon as merely a warning and fail to observe the indicated side for passing.
  • !The guide board is wrongly taken to mean that the entire carriageway is closed or that an automatic speed limit applies.

Exam tip

In exam questions, the design is often decisive: the low, elongated guiding element makes the sign a guide board rather than a guide beacon. You must not assume either that the road is completely closed or that a specific speed limit applies without additional signs.

Did you know

Zeichen 629 is one of the traffic installations and has no separate written description of conduct in the StVO. Its meaning therefore derives mainly from its design, its positioning and the orientation of the arrows or diagonal stripes.

Frequently asked questions

On which side must I pass a guide board with an arrow beacon?

The arrow beacon indicates the side on which traffic is directed past the guide board. Move into the appropriate position early and do not drive over the demarcated area.

How can I identify the side for passing at a hatched beacon?

The diagonal stripes slope down towards the side on which you must pass. The decisive factors are the orientation of the diagonal stripes and the apparent course of the carriageway.

What is the difference between Zeichen 629 and Zeichen 605?

Zeichen 629 has a low, elongated guide board, on which an arrow beacon or hatched beacon may be mounted. Zeichen 605, by contrast, is a guide, arrow or hatched beacon without this guide board.

Does the guide board prescribe a specific speed?

No, Zeichen 629 alone does not contain a specific speed limit. However, your speed must be adapted to the width, course and visibility of the guided carriageway.
