When you see the Zeichen

Reduce your speed in good time and do not drive onto the section of road closed by the mobile barrier board. Move into the appropriate lane early, following the indicated direction for passing and any further signs.

Rules

  • You must not drive on the section of road marked as closed by the mobile barrier board.
  • You must follow any direction for passing shown on the barrier board, for example by a mandatory passing direction.
  • Red warning lights indicate that the entire carriageway is closed; yellow light or yellow flashing light warns of a partial closure.
  • A speed limit does not result from Zeichen 615 alone, but from additional traffic signs or from the obligation to adapt your speed to the hazard.

Tips

  • Look ahead to see which lane is being closed and, if there is a sufficient gap, move into the lane that remains open.
  • Keep a greater following distance because vehicles ahead may brake unexpectedly or change lanes in front of the barrier board.
  • Before reaching the board, look out for transverse, drive-over warning strips and cross them only at a significantly reduced speed.
  • Especially at mobile work sites, expect the lane layout and the position of the barrier board to change at short notice.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The board is understood as merely a non-binding warning. In fact, you must not drive on the section of road it closes.
  • !Zeichen 615 is confused with Zeichen 616: Zeichen 616 also has a flashing arrow, whereas Zeichen 615 indicates the direction of travel through the elements mounted on the board or through further signs.
  • !Yellow warning lights are interpreted as indicating a complete closure of the carriageway. A closure of the entire carriageway is indicated by red warning lights.

Exam tip

In exam images, pay attention to which section of road is actually closed and where traffic is being directed. The typical trap is to continue straight ahead onto the closed section despite the barrier board, or to regard Zeichen 615 as non-binding because it has no flashing arrow.

Did you know

Mobile barrier boards are usually mounted on a trailer, so they can be relocated quickly for moving or short-term work sites. They combine large-scale visual closure with instructions for passing safely.

Frequently asked questions

May I pass a mobile barrier board?

Yes, if a usable section of road remains next to the closure and the signs allow or direct you to pass. You must not drive on the closed section of road itself.

Does Zeichen 615 prescribe a specific speed?

No, Zeichen 615 does not itself specify a particular maximum speed. However, you must drive slowly enough to recognize the changed traffic layout, workers and possible obstacles in good time and react safely.

What do red warning lights on the barrier board mean?

Red warning lights indicate that the entire carriageway is closed. Yellow light or yellow flashing light is used when the entire carriageway is not closed.

How does Zeichen 615 differ from the barrier?

The mobile barrier board is a large, movable installation, often mounted on a trailer, that directs traffic past a closed section. The barrier under Zeichen 600 is a red-and-white marked barrier used to close off a section of road directly.
