When you see the Zeichen

Switch on the dipped headlights at the latest before entering the tunnel, even during the day and when visibility is good. You must not turn around in the tunnel; in the event of a breakdown or emergency, use an available emergency stopping bay or breakdown bay.

Rules

  • Dipped headlights are mandatory when driving through the tunnel.
  • Daytime running lights alone are not sufficient because the rear lights are often not switched on.
  • Turning around is prohibited throughout the tunnel indicated by the sign.
  • In an emergency or breakdown, available emergency stopping bays and breakdown bays should be used.
  • Emergency stopping bays and breakdown bays are not intended for voluntary breaks or making phone calls.

Tips

  • Switch on the dipped headlights before reaching the tunnel entrance so that your vehicle is clearly visible from both the front and rear.
  • Take off your sunglasses before entering so that your eyes can adjust more quickly to the lower brightness.
  • Look out early for information about emergency exits, emergency call facilities and breakdown bays.
  • If you miss an exit, continue in your direction of travel and only look for a safe way to change your route outside the tunnel.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many learner drivers think daytime running lights are sufficient in a tunnel. However, dipped headlights are mandatory.
  • !The sign is sometimes understood as merely indicating a structure. In fact, it specifies concrete requirements and prohibitions.
  • !An emergency stopping bay is confused with a normal parking space. It may only be used in emergencies or for breakdowns.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is the answer that daytime running lights are sufficient in a brightly lit tunnel. The correct answer is: Dipped headlights must also be switched on during the day in a tunnel.

Did you know

Zeichen 327 not only indicates a tunnel, but also directly requires drivers to use dipped headlights and prohibits turning around. It is therefore listed in the StVO among the regulatory Richtzeichen.

Frequently asked questions

Do I also have to switch on dipped headlights in a lit tunnel?

Yes. This requirement applies regardless of whether the tunnel is lit or daylight enters it.

Are automatic headlights sufficient?

Only if they actually switch on the dipped headlights. Do not rely on the automatic system to recognise a brightly lit tunnel in time; instead, check the indicator in the vehicle.

What should I do if I break down in a tunnel?

If possible, use an available breakdown bay or emergency stopping bay, switch on the Warnblinkanlage and protect yourself according to the situation. Follow the signs for emergency call facilities and escape routes.

May I turn around in the tunnel if the carriageway is clear?

No. Turning around is expressly prohibited in the tunnel, even if there is no visible oncoming traffic.
