When you see the Zeichen
Zeichen 311 marks the end of the geschlossene Ortschaft; from this location, the rules for traffic outside built-up areas generally apply. Adjust your speed only after passing the sign and only if no other restriction applies and the traffic, visibility and road conditions allow it.
Rules
- The geschlossene Ortschaft ends exactly at the location of the Ortstafel, not when you first see the sign.
- For passenger cars without trailers, the general maximum speed after this point is 100 km/h, unless another speed limit has been imposed.
- You may drive at a higher speed only after completely passing the sign.
- Other traffic signs, especially newly posted speed limits, must still be obeyed.
Tips
- Immediately after the Ortstafel, check whether another sign sets a lower maximum speed.
- Accelerate smoothly and only when the road surface, visibility and traffic conditions allow it.
- Even after leaving the built-up area, continue watching for junctions, pedestrians and bicycle traffic in the transition area.
- Remember its appearance: the name of the place you are leaving is crossed out with a red diagonal line.
Common misunderstandings
- Many learner drivers accelerate to the speed permitted outside built-up areas before reaching the Ortstafel.
- The sign is confused with the front of the Ortstafel: Zeichen 310 marks the beginning, while Zeichen 311 marks the end of the geschlossene Ortschaft.
- 100 km/h is mistakenly understood as a mandatory speed; for passenger cars without trailers, it is only the general maximum speed.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap shows the vehicle still just before the Ortstafel and asks whether it may already accelerate. The higher speed permitted outside built-up areas applies only from the location of the sign; additional speed limits and the actual road conditions must still be taken into account.
Did you know
On Zeichen 311, the next place may also be shown below the crossed-out place name, together with the distance. This information is for orientation and does not change the fact that the geschlossene Ortschaft ends at the sign.
Frequently asked questions
May I drive at 100 km/h immediately after Zeichen 311?
For a passenger car without a trailer, a maximum of 100 km/h is generally permitted outside built-up areas. However, you may drive at this speed only if no lower speed limit applies and the conditions allow it.
At what point does the geschlossene Ortschaft end?
It ends exactly at the location of the Ortstafel. Before the sign, the rules for traffic within geschlossene Ortschaften continue to apply.
What is the difference between Zeichen 310 and Zeichen 311?
Zeichen 310 is the front of the Ortstafel and marks the beginning of a geschlossene Ortschaft. Zeichen 311 indicates its end with the place name crossed out in red.
Does the Ortstafel cancel every other traffic sign?
No. You must not generally assume that all regulations are cancelled. Pay particular attention to additional or repeated speed-limit and prohibition signs.
