Taxi stand (Zeichen 229)

Taxi stand

Regulatory directional signs Zeichen 229

Mandatory or prohibitory sign Anyone driving a vehicle must not stop at taxi stands, except taxis held ready for carrying passengers. Explanation The length of the taxi stand is indicated by the stated number of taxis provided for, or by the sign placed at the beginning of the section with a horizontal white arrow pointing towards the carriageway and a sign placed at the end with such an arrow pointing away from the carriageway, or by a boundary marking for stopping and parking prohibitions (sign 299).

When you see the Zeichen

Do not stop in the marked area with a normal vehicle, and certainly do not park there. The area is reserved exclusively for taxis held ready for carrying passengers.

Rules

  • At a taxi stand, stopping is prohibited for all other vehicles; even brief voluntary stopping is impermissible.
  • Excepted are taxis held ready there for carrying passengers.
  • The length of the taxi stand may be determined by the stated number of taxis provided for.
  • The beginning and end may be marked by horizontal white arrows in the sign or by a boundary marking according to sign 299.

Tips

  • Pay attention to the arrows on the sign: An arrow pointing toward the carriageway marks the beginning, while an arrow pointing away from the carriageway marks the end.
  • If a number is given, look for the full extent of the designated taxi spaces and keep the entire area clear.
  • Do not use the taxi stand even for quick pick-ups or drop-offs; find a place where stopping is permitted instead.
  • Expect taxi stands especially near train stations, airports and city centres, and keep both the entrance and exit clear.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many people confuse a taxi stand with a bus stop: At a bus stop, parking is generally prohibited up to 15 metres before and after the sign, whereas at a taxi stand even stopping is prohibited.
  • !Briefly waiting with the hazard warning lights on does not make stopping at a taxi stand permissible.
  • !Not every taxi may use the area as a parking space at will; the exception applies to taxis waiting there to carry passengers.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is the claim that you may stop at a taxi stand for up to 3 minutes or briefly let someone out. This is incorrect: For ordinary vehicles, a Haltverbot applies there, not merely a Parkverbot.

Did you know

Zeichen 229 may include a number indicating how many taxis the stand is intended for. Alternatively, its extent can be identified by arrows or boundary markings according to Zeichen 299.

Frequently asked questions

May I briefly let someone get in or out at a taxi stand?

No. Letting someone get in or out also counts as voluntary stopping, which is prohibited for ordinary vehicles at a taxi stand.

May I stay in the vehicle and wait for someone there?

No. Whether you leave the vehicle is irrelevant to the Haltverbot; simply stopping voluntarily is already prohibited.

How can I identify the beginning and end of a taxi stand?

Its length may be indicated by the number of designated taxi spaces. In addition, horizontal white arrows on the signs or a boundary marking according to Zeichen 299 may mark the beginning and end.

Does the exception apply to every vehicle displaying a taxi sign?

The StVO exempts taxis that are waiting at the stand to carry passengers. The taxi stand is therefore not a general parking space for taxis being used for other purposes.
