Parking on pavements (Zeichen 315)

Parking on pavements

Regulatory directional signs Zeichen 315

Mandatory or prohibitory sign 1. Anyone driving a vehicle must not park on pavements with vehicles having a permissible maximum mass exceeding 2.8 t. Parking contrary to the positioning arrangement shown by the sign or contrary to restrictions imposed by supplementary signs is then also prohibited. 2. a) A supplementary sign may restrict the parking permission, in particular by duration, vehicle type, in favour of residents provided with a special parking permit, or to parking with a parking ticket or parking disc. b) A supplementary sign with image 318 (parking disc) and an indication of the number of hours prescribes parking with a parking disc and its permitted maximum duration. c) Supplementary signs may exempt residents with a parking permit from the obligation to park with a parking ticket or parking disc. d) A supplementary sign with the wheelchair-user symbol may restrict the parking permission to severely disabled persons with exceptional walking disability, bilateral amelia or phocomelia or comparable functional impairments, as well as blind persons. e) The parking permission applies only if the parking ticket, parking disc or parking permit is displayed or affixed so as to be clearly legible. 3. a) A supplementary sign may restrict the parking permission in favour of electrically powered vehicles. b) Supplementary signs may exempt electrically powered vehicles from the obligation to park with a parking ticket or parking disc. If parking-ticket machines are installed, the exemption may also be indicated solely at the machine. c) A supplementary sign may restrict the parking permission for electrically powered vehicles by duration. Compliance with the time limit is evidenced by displaying the parking disc. The parking permission applies only if the parking disc is displayed or affixed so as to be clearly legible. 4. a) A supplementary sign may restrict the parking permission in favour of car-sharing vehicles provided with a car-sharing permit. Restriction to vehicles of only one car-sharing company or to particular car-sharing companies is permissible in accordance with the Carsharing Act. The restriction is indicated by an additional statement of the corresponding company name in black lettering on a white background on a further supplementary sign. The parking permission applies only if the car-sharing permit is displayed or affixed in the vehicle so as to be clearly legible. b) Supplementary signs may exempt car-sharing vehicles from the obligation to park with a parking ticket or parking disc. If parking-ticket machines are installed, the exemption may also be indicated solely at the machine. Explanation 1. The beginning of permitted parking may be indicated by a horizontal white arrow in the sign pointing towards the carriageway, and the end by one pointing away from the carriageway. Where signs are repeated along the section, one arrowhead points towards the carriageway and the second away from it. 2. The sign depicts how vehicles are to be positioned.

When you see the Zeichen

You may park on the sidewalk only in the position shown in the sign’s pictogram. Check for any Zusatzzeichen beforehand and make sure your vehicle’s permissible maximum mass is no more than 2,8 t.

Rules

  • Vehicles with a permissible maximum mass over 2,8 t may not park on the sidewalk despite the sign; the decisive factor is the permissible maximum mass recorded for the vehicle, not its current weight.
  • The vehicle must be positioned exactly as shown in the pictogram, for example with only two wheels or completely on the sidewalk.
  • Zusatzzeichen may limit parking permission to certain times, restrict it to specific types of vehicles or authorised persons, or require a parking ticket or parking disc.
  • A parking ticket, parking disc, parking permit or car-sharing permit must, if required, be displayed or attached so that it is clearly legible.
  • Even where parking on the sidewalk is permitted, you must not park over manhole covers or other access covers.

Tips

  • When parking, compare your vehicle’s position carefully with the pictogram and drive slowly onto the sidewalk.
  • Look for white arrows on the sign: an arrow pointing towards the carriageway marks the beginning, while an arrow pointing away from the carriageway marks the end of the parking permission.
  • Immediately after parking, check whether a Zusatzzeichen requires a parking disc, parking ticket or special permit.
  • Check the vehicle documents for the permissible maximum mass if you are driving a heavy SUV, van or motorhome.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many learner drivers believe that Zeichen 315 permits any position on the sidewalk. In fact, only the position shown in the pictogram is permitted.
  • !The actual vehicle mass and the permissible maximum mass are often confused. For the 2,8 t limit, only the permissible maximum mass counts.
  • !The sign is sometimes understood as general permission to park without any further conditions. Zusatzzeichen can restrict the group of authorised users, the parking duration and the required proof.

Exam tip

In exam questions, the 2,8-t limit is a typical trap: A vehicle with a permissible maximum mass over 2,8 t may not park there even if it actually weighs less when unloaded.

Did you know

Zeichen 315 exists in several official variants: The pictogram determines whether the vehicle must be partly or completely on the sidewalk; additional arrows may mark the beginning, continuation or end of the permitted area.

Frequently asked questions

May I park with two wheels on the sidewalk without Zeichen 315?

Generally, no. Parking on the sidewalk is permitted only if it is authorised by Zeichen 315 or by corresponding parking-space markings.

May a vehicle with a permissible maximum mass of exactly 2,8 t park there?

Yes, the prohibition applies to vehicles with a permissible maximum mass over 2,8 t. However, all other requirements of the sign and any Zusatzzeichen must still be observed.

What do the arrows on Zeichen 315 mean?

A horizontal arrow pointing towards the carriageway marks the beginning of permitted sidewalk parking, while an arrow pointing away from the carriageway marks its end. On a repeat sign, two arrowheads point in opposite directions and mark the continuation of the section.

Do I have to display a parking disc when Zeichen 315 is installed?

Only if a Zusatzzeichen with a parking-disc symbol and a time indication requires it. In that case, the parking disc must be displayed so that it is clearly legible and set to the prescribed arrival time.
