End of Kraftfahrstraße

When you see the Zeichen
From this sign onward, the Kraftfahrstraße ends, so the special rules for Kraftfahrstraßen no longer apply. Immediately pay attention to further signs, the course of the road and whether, for example, a geschlossene Ortschaft or a speed limit begins.
Rules
- The sign itself does not impose a specific maximum speed.
- After the sign, the permitted speed depends on further signs, as well as on whether you are driving within or outside a built-up area and on how the roadways are laid out.
- The special access restrictions of the Kraftfahrstraße end: slower motor vehicles and, in principle, cyclists and pedestrians may be permitted to use the road afterward, provided no other traffic signs or regulations prohibit this.
- The special prohibitions that apply on Kraftfahrstraßen, such as turning around and reversing, end at the sign; however, these actions may still be prohibited or dangerous under other regulations.
Tips
- Immediately after the sign, look for speed limits, Ortstafeln, intersections or junctions.
- After the end of the Kraftfahrstraße, expect slower road users and greater differences in speed.
- Adjust your speed early if the road becomes narrower or the grade-separated design ends.
- Do not confuse the crossed-out blue Kraftfahrstraße symbol with an Ortstafel or a sign permitting use of the Seitenstreifen.
Common misunderstandings
- Many learner drivers assume that 50 km/h automatically applies from this sign onward. That is only true if a geschlossene Ortschaft begins at the same time or 50 km/h is explicitly imposed.
- The sign is mistaken for the end of an Autobahn. However, it marks only the end of the Kraftfahrstraße.
- Some people believe that after the sign they may immediately turn around, stop or reverse. This is permitted only if no other rules prohibit it and no one is endangered.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap asks which speed applies immediately after the sign. Do not answer generally with 50 or 100 km/h: what matters is the subsequent signage, whether you are within or outside a built-up area and the further design of the road.
Did you know
Zeichen 331.2 is often placed at exits and at locations where a grade-separated Kraftfahrstraße merges into the ordinary road network. Its counterpart is Zeichen 331.1 „Kraftfahrstraße“.
Frequently asked questions
Does Tempo 50 automatically apply after Zeichen 331.2?
No. The sign only marks the end of the Kraftfahrstraße and does not itself impose a speed limit; 50 km/h generally applies within a built-up area unless otherwise ordered.
May bicycles and slow vehicles travel on the road after the sign?
The special access restrictions of the Kraftfahrstraße no longer apply there. Such road users may therefore generally use the road, provided other traffic signs or mandatory-use rules do not specify otherwise.
Does a speed limit previously imposed also end with the sign?
Not automatically. A speed limit imposed by a sign ends only according to the applicable rules, for example through a cancellation sign or when the designated stretch ends.
Is Zeichen 331.2 also the end of a geschlossene Ortschaft?
No. The end of a geschlossene Ortschaft is indicated by the reverse side of the Ortstafel, Zeichen 311; the two signs may be placed independently of each other.
