Give-way symbol

Road Markings Sign number: 1036

When you see the sign

The yield triangle is a white, inverted triangle painted on the road and indicates that you must give way. Reduce your speed, check the traffic you must give way to, and stop before any yield line if necessary to comply with your duty to give way.

Rules

  • You must not obstruct or interfere with the road user who has priority.
  • You must reduce your speed well in advance and be able to stop before the yield line or before entering the crossing area.
  • Giving way does not mean stopping unconditionally; you may continue without stopping if the way is clear and you can do so without obstructing or interfering with others.
  • The yield triangle must not be confused with a lane line, warning line or barrier line; it is a triangular marking that alerts you to your duty to give way.

Tips

  • Look early for a yield line, sign 202 «Vikeplikt» and traffic approaching from both sides.
  • Choose a speed low enough to allow you to stop in a controlled manner if visibility is poor or the traffic situation changes.
  • Position the vehicle so that you have the best possible view without entering the area where other traffic has priority.
  • Avoid automatically following the vehicle in front; reassess your duty to give way for your own passage.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people think that the yield triangle always requires a complete stop. It does not; a complete stop is only necessary when the traffic situation or visibility requires it.
  • !Some people interpret the triangle as a directional arrow or ordinary road decoration, even though it indicates a specific situation where you must give way.
  • !Some people stop so far forward that the vehicle is already obstructing crossing traffic, cyclists or pedestrians.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be the difference between giving way and stopping: the yield triangle requires you to give way, but not to stop every time. You must nevertheless stop if necessary to avoid obstructing or interfering with the traffic you must give way to.

Did you know

The yield triangle is often called a “shark's tooth” because of its triangular shape. In Norway, it is used on the road to make the duty to give way easier to notice, particularly where a sign beside the road may be difficult to see in time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to stop at a yield triangle?

No. You must reduce your speed and give way, but you may continue without coming to a complete stop if the road is clear and you do not obstruct or interfere with others.

Where should I stop if I have to give way?

Stop before the yield line if there is one. Without a yield line, you must stop where you have the necessary visibility, but before the vehicle enters the area used by the traffic you must give way to.

Is the yield triangle the same as a yield line?

No. The yield triangle is the inverted triangle painted on the road, while the yield line is a transverse line of triangles showing where you should stop when stopping is necessary.

Does the vehicle in front affect my duty to give way?

No, you must check yourself that it is safe to drive. Even if the vehicle in front passes, new traffic may arrive before it is your turn.
