Combined lines
At combined lines, road users must comply with the line closest to them. A vehicle that has crossed into a lane for oncoming traffic may nevertheless return to the right-hand side of the road. A double yellow warning line indicates the separation between lanes in which the direction of travel may be varied.
When you see the sign
Position yourself so that you can clearly see which of the two yellow lines is closest to your lane. With Skilt 1006.2, you must follow this line: if the solid line is closest, you must not cross it, while the warning line being closest warns that visibility is too limited for a normal overtaking manoeuvre.
Rules
- Skilt 1006.2 consists of a yellow warning line combined with a yellow solid line.
- You must always follow the line closest to the lane in which you are driving.
- If the solid line is closest, you must not drive on or over it or drive to the left of it.
- If the warning line is closest, it warns that visibility ahead is too limited for a normal overtaking manoeuvre.
- If you have already moved into the lane for oncoming traffic, you may cross the lines to return to the right-hand side of the road.
Tips
- Look at the line closest to your vehicle, not the line on the other side of the road marking.
- Normally refrain from overtaking when the warning line is closest, because the road marking warns of limited visibility.
- Check the road marking again after bends and hilltops, as the line closest to you may change.
- If you are completing an overtaking manoeuvre, return calmly and safely to the right-hand lane as soon as it is safe to do so.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think that the stricter of the two lines applies to both directions of travel. It is the line closest to your own lane that determines what applies.
- Some people interpret the warning line as a solid line. The warning line is not an absolute prohibition on crossing, but here it warns that visibility is too limited for a normal overtaking manoeuvre.
- A common mistake is to think that you cannot cross the solid line to return to the right-hand side after starting an overtaking manoeuvre.

- BBegin overtaking because the warning line means that both lines may be crossed.
- CDrive on the solid line, but avoid crossing completely over to the left.
- DRefrain from overtaking because the solid line closest to you cannot be crossed.
Hard
Which line combination does the marking in the picture show?
- AA white warning line is alongside a white solid line.
- BA yellow lane line is alongside a yellow solid line.
- CA yellow warning line is alongside a yellow solid line.
- DTwo yellow warning lines are alongside each other between lanes with variable direction.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the image may show a solid line and a warning line side by side. First identify which line is closest to the vehicle; do not choose an answer simply because there is a solid line somewhere in the combination.
Did you know
This combination means that the rules can differ for traffic travelling in opposite directions on the same stretch of road. The solid line may be closest for one direction of travel, while the warning line is closest for the other.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cross the lines when the warning line is closest to me?
There is no absolute prohibition on crossing from your side, but the warning line means that visibility is too limited for a normal overtaking manoeuvre. You may only cross if it can be done legally and entirely safely.
What applies when the solid line is closest to my vehicle?
You must not drive on or over the solid line or drive to the left of it. The exception is that you may cross back to the right-hand side if you are already in the lane for oncoming traffic.
Why is a different line closest to traffic travelling in the opposite direction?
Visibility may differ in the two directions of travel, for example at a hilltop or on a bend. Combined lines make it possible to give different instructions for each direction.
Is Skilt 1006.2 the same as an ordinary yellow warning line?
No. Here, the warning line is combined with a parallel solid line, and each driver must follow the line closest to their own lane.
